I just installed AntiX 7.2 on an old Dell PIII 933 with 256 MB of RAM. This is one of those problem machines that nothing seemed to run very well on. AntiX 7.2 was the exception! The system boots quick, only uses 30 MB of RAM at startup and is a fully functional system. If you have one of these old problem machines sitting around doing nothing you might want to try AntiX 7.2 on it.
I had tried the Mint Fluxbox CE and Fluxbuntu on this old Dell and the machine was slow and nearly unusable. The only thing I could find wrong with AntiX 7.2 was that residual config files were left on the final release. (Yes, I am a stickler about that!) All of the default applications worked and multimedia was set up for the most part. The documentation was good and available within the system.
I would highly recommend AntiX 7.2 to anyone needing an extremely light and fully functional OS for an older pc.

And:Now here it is SliTaz 1.0 from the LiveCD, with Firefox opened (3 tabs), an xterm, jwm + lxpanel; note that SliTaz starts by default lighttpd and php-cgi (8 processes): LiveCD with Firefox: 66-67 MB of RAM occupied
See SliTaz is getting much better (I guess) for a tiny little update...As it's very simple to install it, here's the memory usage on the installed system, before starting any Firefox: 28 MB!

I have AntiX set up pretty nice on the old Dell. AntiX takes a bit of work to customize but I guess that is the price for a system that uses so little memory. The documentation gave me most of the answers I needed and the forum gave me the rest. I changed AntiX to a nice blue theme, Slim background, wallpaper and a matching theme. This old clunker is now a nice, fast and very usable machine again!

Does anyone know what applications are available for this? I'm interested in saving old computers for people and would like to know what I can install on this. An amazing distribution. I have tried to install nearly every other Linux distro on my niece's HP omnibook XE2 and they all failed. Strange thing is managed to install XP but it was real slow. Installed AntiX7.2, no problem, found wireless and now using Gnome, a fantastic distro.

Well after reading this post I became curious about anti-x, gave it a shot in virtualbox. I must say it is an impressive little distro. Runs really fast, has synaptic for packages, will try it out on my old laptop once I find my cdrw. They only thing I have been able to do with it so far is to max the resolution with it in virtual box. I'm just getting the 800x600 default, I tried to use the display tool, but it didn't do anything for me, i tried to update xorg.conf, but it didn't seem to do anything. I probably just forgot to type something in somewhere, not a big deal though.
