Replacing GNOME with XFCE

How do I replace GNOME completely with XFCE? I just want anything to make my laptop run faster. Btw, can XFCE run Compiz and Emerald?

It will be very hard to change the main edition like that (the word is completely)
Why not wait for the Elyssa XFCE edition or try the beta you can download (it is a bit shaky, but works real nice mostly)

I beleive it should be possible to add xfce as a desktop, so that while logging you can choose either xfce or gnome. Also its possible to run compiz on xfce. just googled for "compiz on xfce." Here are the few links I got:

Since both GNOME and XFCE is GTK, it really doesn't matter (that much) which one you install first. But as Husse pointed out, if you want to COMPLETELY replace it; fresh install.

I was under the impression you need xfce to make things faster... but on a second thought, if you are looking for eyecandy like compiz, you again are adding performance overhead. In that case you can better stay with gnome or else if you are looking for xfce, you can wait for xfce edition as suggested.

XFCE is cleaner more lightweight DE, so the overall performance will increase, even with compiz running. It's not that bad, just need a little getting used to and customizing, and it is actually quite nice. Hate the fact that everyone needs to add text to the top of the menu, though, just leave it as is
