Merging two partitions together

Post by jhouse59 »

Is there a way to merge two partitions together? I thought GParted would. But, if it can I can't figure it out. Can someone tell me of another program that will do this? I've got WinXP installed on one partition and Mint on the other. I want to make Windows bigger and install Mint 5.0 on another disk.

I'm not sure what you mean by "merge" partitions. Gparted will resize any partition. Are you talking about installing Mint 5 on a separate hard drive? Is so, just plug in the drive and tell the installer to use the second hard drive.

I had WinsXP and Mint 4 installed on the same disk. I installed Mint 5 on a different hard drive. Now I want to merge the Windows partition with the one Mint 4 was installed on.

I'm still confused. What do you mean by "merge". Do you want to get rid of Mint 4 and expand XP?

You can use gparted to expand XP. Boot a linux CD and open gparted with your windows HD plugged in. Then there will be a drop down menu in the top right of the window that shows available HD's. Find your windows HD. Right click on it and select Resize/Move. Then move the slider how ever far you want it to go. The windows partition must be unmounted to resize it.

Maybe what he is referring to is back when I was using Windows and Partition Magic there was a function for merging 2 empty partitions. What really happened when you watched the details was that both partitions were deleted and a new one was created causing the appearance of the partitions being merged. However data in both partitions was lost.

Where are you at in TN? I'm in Franklin, KY bordering Portland, TN. I've noticed several TN users popping up lately.

Ever hear of Rogersville. It's north of Knoxville (about 80 or 90 miles) and south of Kingsport 26 (miles).

My last name is Rogers. Maybe I need to move there :D My cousin lives in Knoxville just before you hit the mountains, but that is as far as I've been.

I work for Goldenrod dairies in Franklin, KY. I deliver milk to the Sumner County schools, so I'm pretty close to Lebanon some days. It's a small world!
