WIne do has limitations. on the http://appdb.winehq.org/ there is a list of programs that are compatible with wine (grouped in to platinum / gold / silver). And wine is not junk. There is a commercial application - codeweavers based on wine. If wine was junk, they would have bankrupt.
There are certain tools like wine doors / playwine (not sure if this is correct name...) which help you in installing software. You can try them out. Also remember google is your best bet to search for a solution.
