The only file explorer supporting it was thunar, but it doesn't work so well TBH. Nautilus 2.24 will support this and tabbed windows as well, and the compact list view has been added to the trunk recently.

thanks but i cant find 2.23.4 after i added the repos, refresh and searched for nautilus so it's not working for me (mint 5)
i managed upgraded to 2.23.4, after rebooted, broken the mintmenu. best to avoid!

Found a solution to restore mintMenu functionality. You have to reinstall some packages (with your original mint repositories)
Search and install the following packages with synaptic:
