Configuring various devices like Sound, Web in Mint in VBox

Post by dnmint »

I have a Dell D420 Latitude Laptop.
I have XP Pro as Host & Elyssa as Guest in Virtual Box since 21st June, barely 24 hrs. I intend a full switch over after I learn to use Mint
I am able to do most of the things. What I am not comprehending are
  • I am not able to activate my Mike & Playback. When I try Sound recorder to test them I get no records or play back.
I do not know how to activate my Philips Fun cam in Mint
I need both to use Skype video chats & conferencing.
I am new to Linux ( Ubuntu 15 days & Mint 1 day. Please give me 'dummy type instructions
Thanks in advance

I guess this is a driver issue. We need a bit more information, please post the output of lsusb . I guess you have a integrated camera and microphone, so get one working will hopefully get both to work.

Philips Funcam has integrated camera & microphone.

I am giving below outputs
Thanks.
In lspci USB controller is there. see output below

I have rechecked thru Package Manager that 'usbutils' are installed.
In the virtual box when I try to mount webcam I get the following message

USB device 'USB camera' with UUID {c21966a6-d2e6-406b-add9-7cb5cb743228} is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.
Result Code:

Callee:
IConsole {d5a1cbda-f5d7-4824-9afe-d640c94c7dcf}
I do not understand what this means.
My usb mouse is working well.
I have downloaded the driver for Philipos Funcam on Desktop pwc-10.0.12-rc1.tar.bz2 ( available from http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/files/
I extracted it but not able to install it.
Any advice is welcome. As I use Skype extensively, not having webcam - voice chat would be a problem for my total migration to Mint
Thanks in advance

Sorry, I wasn't reading your post properly, I thought you were using XP as guest. When it comes to virtual machines, a great tool, but no good for checking hardware compatibility. I would suggest you run a live session to check if your camera and mic is working, as the virtual machine use virtual hardware and not your actual hardware.

I just restarted VBox & Mint .
Mounted the web cam, it got mounted
the terminal shoes
dnmint@dnmint-laptop ~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0471:0321 Philips
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
dnmint@dnmint-laptop ~ $

Therfore the Camera is recognised. Now I have to install driver from the Desktop pwc-10.0.12-rc1.tar.bz2

pwc should be included, try downloading cheese or camorama, to see if it is supported:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude install cheese

Downloaded both cheese & camorama. The Philips cam is not recognised though seen in lsusb
Therefore the Camera is now recognized. Now I have to make it functional by installing driver
I have downloaded the driver for Philips Funcam on Desktop pwc-10.0.12-rc1.tar.bz2 ( available from website http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/files/
I extracted it but not able to install it.

It seems it is getting closer to being resolved- with your timely help :)

Well, pwc is included. Try

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep pwc
If it isn't loaded, try

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe pwc
If you really have to compile the driver, check the readme file which most likely is included. And you will most likely need build-essentials:

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude install build-essentials

Thanks.
The following is the output
dnmint@dnmint-laptop ~ $ lsmod | grep pwc
pwc 86912 0
compat_ioctl32 2304 1 pwc
videodev 29440 1 pwc
usbcore 146028 4 pwc,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd
dnmint@dnmint-laptop ~ $

I have build essential installed ( not essentials :) )
What do I do next
Thanks for your patience

Sorry, my mistake :)
Compiling modules is a bit tricky, especially when you have an earlier version installed.
And some Googling I have done, does not suggest that this camera is supported in Linux, http://osdir.com/ml/drivers.pwc/2005-12/msg00016.html. I also found a few French and German posts about this camera, but no Howto to get it working.

Have a look at this site
http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/files/
This has a number of drivers upto Jan 2006 , only I am not able to make anything out of it.
I am persisting because the Webcam works in XP . I would hate to see Mint losing out :) :?:

You will have a newer driver or the same driver installed on Mint. 10.0.13 on my box.
EDIT:
Seems straight forward, start with

Code: Select all

make
then

Code: Select all

sudo make install
The only issue is that you will probably be downgrading your driver and that you need to completely remove the installed pwc module from your system.

Code: Select all

modinfo pwc
And you need to be in the folder where you extracted the *.tar.gz file

Code: Select all

cd /path/to/folder

I am sorry, I am lost.
I have following files in my Desk top
  • /home/dnmint/Desktop/pwc-10.0.12-rc1.tar.bz2
    /home/dnmint/Desktop/pwc-10.0.12-rc1
    /home/dnmint/Desktop/libpwc-20060106.tar.bz2
    /home/dnmint/Desktop/libpwc-20060106
    /home/dnmint/Desktop/pwc-10.0.11.tar.bz2
    /home/dnmint/Desktop/pwc-10.0.11
I got these downloaded from the website indicated earlier. It says the last four files are current - dont know why.
I thought the ver 12 would be current.
In the listing the files are in tar.bz2 format & extracted format.

Please give me a dummy type step by step instruction for using these.
Also I do not understand the boxed instructions as below.
Code: Select all
modinfo pwc
Having reached this far, I do not want to hang my boots
Please please help this Dummy

As I pointed out, that driver is older than the one installed in Elyssa. I also check the compabillity list for the pwc driver, and it seems like your webcam isn't supported. It seems like a dual boot setup would be best for you if you are dependent on webcam support.

OK Thanks for all your time & effort.
Still can you explain to me the Code: Select all box & how I react - use it?
Thanks agin. I think I will go for a dual boot option.
I have posted under Newbie seeking advice on it with my already partitioned HDD ( C; 35 GB with XP & D 45 GB with Files)
Thanks :D :D

You first need to extract the files. Right click on the file, select extract. Let us say you extract it to /home/username/Desktop/pwc (which means it is a folder called pwc on your desktop). Then you have to cd into that folder (where makefile is located):

Code: Select all

cd /home/username/Desktop/pwc
Then you are in the correct folder:

Code: Select all

make
sudo make install
