Making money out of linux,CAN YOU DIG IT
I'm trying to make some money of linux.
Trying to replace all XP installations with linux.
As of my 10th installation ,I'll put 15% of reinstallation that the customer pays into the donation.
I hope many follow my example.
As of the announcement of the end-of-life of XP ,this should be the start sign of the new linux time.

I was thinking about the same thing, how much are you charging to replace XP? And how many have you done so far? How long has it actually taken to do for each one? Have you advertized at all?
Re: Making money out of linux,CAN YOU DIG IT
repair your broken M$ PC ??
That's Chargeable !.
replace your M$ O/S with a Linux O/S ??

Re: Making money out of linux,CAN YOU DIG IT
Delivering my first pc with linux mint to a customer.
I had my fare share of problems to solve :
-localisation : all gui had to be in dutch => only succeeded partially
-thunderbird => not possible to get localised language gui ,no language packs
-getting the mails from outlook 2000 into thunderbird
-brother all in one printer , scanner part not working
-finding software that play powerpoint presentation with video/audio in a flawless matter => kingsoft did the trick
-card reader for e-id was not working -> used another usb port , OK
Crossing my fingers she'll like it. I'm sure it will cause the computer is now way faster then when XP was on it.
Meanwhile another customer is interested too to get linux mint. Telling you economic crisis + re-usable hardware = linux intro on the desktop. Next the gamevendors picking up ,and Bill is getting worried. He's already lost the game on tablet and phone .

And I hope you aren't the same person that tried to parlay a Linux distribution into a scam money scheme

Re: Making money out of linux,CAN YOU DIG IT
Good luck with your efforts! With Windows 8 coming on new computers and XP loosing support many people are willing to try Linux these days.
Re: Making money out of linux,CAN YOU DIG IT
There you go ,delivered the first install today.
Didn't went as smooth as I thought.
Seems the preparation of the desktop, I did that right next to the wifi router ,and at that time I didn't have any problems.
But once over there at the customer,it seems that the wifi usb stick (TPlink TP-WN823N) didn't work as expected.
This was luckily fixed by a Linksys usb stick (can't remember the model) I had lying around.
So next time, I'll test the wifi first from a greater distance.
What I suspect is that the buildin driver only used 11-b , instead of 11-g or 11-n.
A problem that I thought was fixed wasn't : scanner capabilities of the brother laser all in one printer.
In order to fix this one , I had to chmod the files of the brother driver for all other : sudo chmod o+wr /dev/bus/usb/00*/*
But this fix didn't stick ,and was gone after the first reboot. So I still need to implement a permanent fix.
But all in all , I think the end user -an old lady of 75 y old- will remain using it.
AND good news : I have my second order in in for someone ,willing to try it as well. This time it'll be a laptop. Acer. Really looking forward.
The thing I'm missing are good linux conversion tools that can convert the mails from outlook express ,and outlook towards mbox. This conversion was done by using an intermediate IMAP google account.
Can't wait anyhow to get the Linux Mint 17 xfce ,that'll incorporate more and better drivers. (very important for itunes and iphone 7).
Keeping you posted chaps. Installation number is slowly closing in

Koen

First feedback from the customer :
Good :
Bad :
Having issues with the short doubleclick time.
I only came across this very nice article : "....Do this first in Linux Mint 13 Xfce ..."
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... -mint-xfce
It's mentioned there :

It's mentioned there :
Increase the double-click interval
2.1. The double-click interval, or the maximum time between two clicks for them to be recognized as a double-click command, is far too short in Mint Xfce. That makes it hard to perform a succesful double-click.
You can increase the double-click interval to a more reasonable value like this:
Menu button - Settings - Mouse and Touchpad
Tab Behavior - section Double Click: set the time at 400 ms.
Note: user preference, so repeat this in each user account

update : 4th customer going to Mint XFCE 17. Slowly getting to 10
