Re: Newb: Trying to install PS3 Media Server on Mint 17 Cinn

Looking in the PPA site it appears there is not a folder setup for Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) so apt-get does not see a package designed for it to install on this version of Ubuntu (or Mint). Basically, the maintainer of the PPA site has not yet updated it to support Ubuntu 14.04 ( and therefore Mint 17 ).

If you're feeling adventurous, you could download the tar.gz file from the Sourceforge website http://sourceforge.net/projects/ps3medi ... z/download and install it manually.

I was afraid that was the issue. I was looking at the manual installation and wow, lots of work to do.

So out of curiosity, I did some checking and it seems you can make Ubuntu/Mint install software from a PPA that doesn't have the current release by editing the software source and changing the release name directly.
REF: http://askubuntu.com/questions/293203/h ... us-release

So in Mint, go to Menu -> Administration -> Software Sources. Then click on the PPAs button to list the PPAs you've added. Select the entry for ps3mediaserver (not the Sources one), and click the Edit URL button at the bottom. Then change the word trusty to raring and click OK. I also disabled the PPA entry for the PS3MediaServer (Sources) entry as I don't plan to install from source. You can leave it enabled if you like but be sure to make the same replacement in that URL as well. Click the Update Cache button above the PPA list. You can now close the Software Sources window and open Software Manager to install ps3mediaserver (or install it from apt-get).

It appears the latest release from source is 1.91 but the PPA offers 1.81. Reading the PS3Mediaserver.org forums though seems to indicate that the 1.91 release is having some issues so perhaps it's best to stick with the PPA release version.

Cheers!

Awesome! I am going to give that a try when I get home. Thank you! I will report back if I am successful.

the steps txba516 recommended worked for me. Just remember to do an apt-get update before you try to install again if you've already updated once.

Thanks,

That worked great folks! Thanks a million! It is so much nicer serving from Mint to my PS3 than it is via Windows... It refreshes faster, starts faster, less issues sending... Also, have yet to run into any issues with multiple different file-types. Happy camper.

Well, the server is no longer working. Once I solved my start-up issue referenced in this thread: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=171742 I can no longer use PS3 Media Server. I have tried to remove and reinstall the server using apt-get remove and install (truncated here for clarity) and still not working. Any ideas?

Hi Trikster,

Sorry to hear about the disk woes but glad to hear you got the startup working again (well done btw).
Do you get any errors when you start the PS3 Media Server manually from the command line?
Are there any relevant entries in the system log if it is starting as a service?
We need more info around "not working" please.

Cheers!

Hi,

used the PS3 one for a while but went back to serviio lately (I used it on both win and linux for more then 5 years)
Love how easy it is to setup profiles for the devices that connect to it.

As far as the PS3 Media Server software goes, it is stating that the service should be showing up on the PS3. So as far as it is concerned, it is working. I think I am going to try and add in those two lines of code that I removed from the other thread I linked too and see if the server comes back online.

I will look into the other server the other person mentioned.

Finally got it sorted out. I had to go into the area where I select the drive/folder where the movies are. I had to remove the path already listed there and recreate it. Then, I have to make sure that the login keychain is unlocked. For whatever reason when I boot, it stays locked. Once it is unlocked, the server will show up on my PS3.
