On the Unetbootin application, can it be used to make a presistent bootable USB key of Linux Mint 17 ?
There is a note on the application that says: Space used to preserve files across reboots (Ubuntu Only).

It worked with Maya (LM 13), but I meanwhile prefer a normal installation on 16 GB USB, because I had some update problems (8 GB USB).

yes it works, but not all the time. The most reliable method is to use the dd command.

If I understand the OP, he wants a persistent part on his USB drive; with the normal "dd" command that is not possible.
(BTW: Mint imagewriter uses this normal command and therefore you don't have extra space to save files or settings.)
