I recognized the following problem with linux mint 17 xfce edition,
whenever I use vlc oder other programs after starting mint, the volume is maximized (very loud) and after i use the volume bar it is instantly much lower, but after startup again the same problem occurs.
I have an USB soundcard, is there a solution to this annoying problem?

Re: Volume too high at startup of application
I remember having this problem before in xfce and after removing xfce4-mixer all was ok and pulseaudio didn't make problems with this annoying maximized volume on startup,
but I see that Mint xfce doesn't use xfce4-mixer, can somebody help until my ears are totally damaged

Re: Volume too high at startup of application
I'm using Mint 17 Xfce and the (global) volume stays where it was set, between boots.
You might use 'amixer' in your startup to set the volume where you want it.
$ man amixer
$ amixer --help
