Bootfailure after update to kernel 3.14

Post by mvdheijd »

Hi,

I'm running LMDE tracking Debian testing on a Dell Latitude E6400. After pulling in the kernel update to 3.14, boot fails. This appears to be caused by nouveau. I am not entirely sure whether I should report this here, as it is probably a kernel issue and not directly related to Mint, but I thought it wouldn't hurt. It's not a huge problem because I can boot from the previous kernel. Below you will find the relevant nouveau entries from the dmesg for the failing boot (plus the version line for reference).

Any advice, or should I report this upstream?

Hi,

are you using the latest bios A34?
Seems the kernel didn't compile correcly and can't make any sense of your GPU.
Witch version of the 3.14 did you install?

No, my BIOS is at some old version, but that should not matter, because it has always worked fine.

To be clear, I didn't compile a kernel myself, the update is directly from debian-testing. The package is:

Code: Select all

Package: linux-image-3.14-1-amd64
Versions:
3.14.9-1 (/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.nl.debian.org_debian_dists_testing_main_binary-amd64_Packages)

well another kernel does integrate new or updated drivers and may get infos from the bios that the old kernel was able to handle better (why would it now detect nouveau...?)

Wath is the previous kernel? doesn't say in your post.
Also check your grub.cfg, had to use nomodeset when moving from 3.13 to 3.14 on one of my Dell laptops think it was the Inspiron 1425 with i915 onboard graphic and blacklist the driver.

I'm always using the wget and sudo dpkg to get a new kernel (so I can see how it installs and catch an error message during the update of the modules)

Just updated to 3.14.11 yesterday on 3 Dell and working so far, have to try it on the Inspiron as it is the only one with intel onborad graphics (it should work as it is running already 3.14.2)
So jumping from 3.13.x to another 3.13.y should always work, jumping to another 3.zz may induce problems.

My previous (working) kernel is 3.13.10.

Also I just noticed that I forgot to mention a relevant part of my system spec. That it tries to use Nouveau as graphics driver is ok, since my Latitude has a nVidia Quadro card. So the dmesg in my first post is correct when it detects a "[ DEVICE][0000:01:00.0] Chipset: G98 (NV98) [ DEVICE][0000:01:00.0] Family : NV50".

check out this, they also state the a kernel upgrade will probably break the xserver

As I can't replicate the problem I will stop here but you should be ok posting on the debian forum.
