Re: Mint 17 with Cinnamon freezing, possibly touchpad relate
So I've had a good couple of days of purely Mint Cinnamon with the old kernel with nouveu drivers, with no real issues The mouse sometimes pauses briefly, but for half a second at most. I'm assuming that's when it would normally have frozen. So yeh, it was the graphics drivers. Not sure why switching back when I first installed Mint 17 did nothing, but I'm not fussed about that right now. I'm just happy to have a relatively bug-free Linux OS again.
Thanks again for all your help!

I'm experiencing the same issue on my new laptop (Clevo/Metabox W650SJ nvidia-340), is there no better solution than not use NVIDIA drivers?
So far so good using a USB mouse.

Re: Mint 17 with Cinnamon freezing, possibly touchpad relate
well wait for a driver update from nvidia or try a newer kernel. (stay within the minor revision if you have 3.13.a try 3.13.x)
Re: Mint 17 with Cinnamon freezing, possibly touchpad relate
I'm on a Dell XPS15 L502X and just installed Mint 17 / Cinnamon and am having a presistant freezing of the touchpad pointer.
I've been able to open tty1..7 ok; however, I didn't realize X11 was on tty8.
My current escape from the freeze up is to ctrl-alt-f7 then back to ctrl-alt-f8.
I'm getting pretty fast with the key-combination but surely there's got to be a solution.

open another thread as your system is not the same and other troubleshooting must be done.

Re: Mint 17 with Cinnamon freezing, possibly touchpad relate
Actually sounds like the same thing as my issue (also a Dell XPS15 L502X). Except it wasn't just a mouse freeze, but a complete graphics freeze (only found out when I was watching a video and it stopped too). My quick fix for a while was the same key combo. Like it has been said in this thread, try switching to the nouveu drivers and rebooting. Fixed it for me.

2 things to check with kernel 3.13 and up
1) bios: make sure you have the latest one and check for something like
2) try another kernel like 3.15 (off course have a backup before doing so)
Once you have done so remove the extra settings used in the grub as they were there to bypass original kernel settings.

it should be enabledenable legacy rom

Hi!
I have the same problem.
I tried a lot of commands, but nothing works here.
It's a kernel issue, not?
i think it needs a update to work properly.

I suggest you open your own thread, you may not have exactly the same hw, drivers or bios?
Re: Mint 17 with Cinnamon freezing, possibly touchpad relate
OP: Did you ever find a satisfactory fix? I have a new 2015 model of the XPS15 and I also got these crashes.
The following seems to work, for me, for now, for at least the last few days:
[Edit: The nouveau driver did not work for me, it was unstable. It even crashed the whole system when trying to switch to a virtual console.]

- Install the NVIDIA driver though Menu -> Administration -> Driver Manager
- Run Menu -> Administration -> NVIDIA X Server Settings (should be installed alongside the driver, otherwise it's the package nvidia-settings installable through your favorite package manager)
- Use that settings tool to choose the GPU profile "Intel (Power Saving Mode)"

Re: Mint 17 with Cinnamon freezing, possibly touchpad relate
I did. The nouveau drivers worked for me, I thought I mentioned that in an earlier post. Your fix seems to make sense too for most people, but I also hope to use the GPU for some things, so removing/ignoring it won't help me in the long run.

Hi,
Any solution for this problem?
Or any tips how to troubleshoot?
I have experienced the same kind of problem for the last couple of weeks using Rafaela and the fault seems to trigger more and more frequent every day.
Using the touchpad triggers the fault.
I can only work a couple of minutes before the screen hangs. Mouse pointer is unmovable but I can log into the computer from another machine. No process is taking much CPU power and I do not find anything special in the logs.

Hi,
I just managed to upgrade bios from A06 to A12 (L502XA12.exe using WinPE + 32 bit oledlg.dll) and I do not encounter the problem any more.
At least not during last hour when I try to trigger the fault.
I still haven't made i8kutils work but that is causing no harm at this moment.
I suppose my problem was a compability issue between old bios and new SW.
Anyway, thanks for this post. It made me look at the right direction.

No problem! Glad you found a solution. I might have a look at that too. My problem was fixed with Mint 17.1, but it may happen again with 17.2. BIOS update will be the first thing on my list if it returns.

Hi,
I just want to inform you that my machine is still freezing once or twice per day.
The bios update made big difference but there is still a problem.

Hi,
I tried to upgrade to latest display driver
I tried a couple of other drives with same result.
I had to fall back to original driver 340.76 to be able to start X.
Does anyone know how to successfully install the 352.41 driver?

I tried to upgrade to latest display driver
since the description looked very promising.Linux x64 (AMD64/EM64T) Display Driver
Version 352.41
Release Date Fri Aug 28, 2015
Operating System Linux 64-bit
Language English (US)
File Size 73.6 MB
Unfortunately did not X-server start up with this driver due to segmentation fault.Added support for the following GPUs:
GeForce GTX 950
Quadro M4000
Quadro M5000
Fixed a bug that caused VDPAU to only display the top half of a video frame when decoding and displaying H.265/HEVC encoded video streams.
Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash if an OpenGL application tried to allocate a drawable when GPU-accessible memory is exhausted.

I managed to load the driver
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... -released/
It is too early to say that it solved my problems but so far so good.
I also noticed that ctrl-Alt-F2 (console mode) and then ctrl-Alt-F8 (back to working X) is a temporarily solution for the freezing problem.
