NVIDIA propietary drivers issue.

Post by WhiteForte »

Hello guys, I hope anybody could help me with this. Since I installed LMDE on my machine (32 bit) I've been having video playback issues with local files as well with youtube (720p videos and up lag behind audio). I tried installing all the flashplayers I could find, but no solution.

After leaving that aside because of university reasons, I went to try and play Stepmania. It lagged a lot. Then triend Minecraft, same issue. I could notice that both of those programs rely on OpenGL, so I went to install the NVIDIA drivers for that reason (to see if that was the issue).

The problem is now, that I cannot get a proper xconfig file. Most of the time I lose my GUI and the one time I was able to boot it up, I couldn't change back to my usual screen resolution (I used this page as a tutorial when it worked https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers). When I tried to configure NVIDIA, it said it was not in use at the moment, and it couldn't recognize my screen properly.

Nvidia-detect is telling me the following:

Code: Select all

Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation C61 [GeForce 6100 nForce 405] [10de:03d1] (rev a2)
Your card is only supported up to the 304 legacy drivers series.
It is recommended to install the
    nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver
package.
Now the big question, is there anything I can do? Sorry for the big wall of text but I needed to explain myself the best way possible.

Yes, I tried with two of the packages there, since my card was listed twice, but none of them worked, always the error of X not starting properly. This is the log file I got:

When I was able to get X started, I couldn't change my screen resolution, so I guess the "no screens found" is the problem here?

It is recommended to install the

package.
It basically tells you what package you need to install to solve the problem.

The problem is that installing those drivers (304xx) also gives the same issue.

Hi,

could detail the way you did try to install the drivers?
Did you use the open source drivers before?

Also post the results of

Code: Select all

@PatH57

Since I'm very new to any Linux, I just copied and pasted in the terminal the packages to install described in the link in the 2nd post (viewtopic.php?f=191&t=82424#p478177) (using the 173xx legacy drivers). Then I ran nvidia-xconfig and then blacklisted nouveau (everything done as root). After that I rebooted my system and then no interface.

With open source drivers you mean nouveau? If so, yes, I have been using those since day 1.

inxi -Fxz gives this output:

Thank you for the answers. Unfortunately, the issue persists. I guess it's because of the error "no screens found" described above in the log?

Your first post clearly states that you should use 304xx

first thing first

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
dpkg -l |grep nvidia
cat /var/log/Xorg* |grep WW
cat /var/log/Xorg* |grep EE
your previous inxi -Fxz shows that you're using gallium and the nvidia modules failed to load at boot. we need to know the latest inxi result so that we now the latest condition of your system.

Ok guys, I managed to get them installed. Somehow, this time I was able to launch my system without nouveau, but I can't find the nvidia menu now and none of my video issues were resolved. Oh well, that's for another topic.
