systemd-analyze critical-chain

dmesg tell you everything happened i your system. you need to filter the message with 'dmesg -l warn' or 'dmesg -l err'

Something strange is going on with the xserver-xorg-video-radeon package. An upgrade has just come through, from 1:7.3.0-2 to 1:7.4.0-1. When I try to upgrade, I get a message about unmet dependencies and held packages. I do have some held packages, but they aren't dependencies of this package as far as I can see.

Thanks for responding. There's no informative result from 'dist-upgrade' run in a terminal - it just says '0 to upgrade', etc. The error message appears only in Synaptic. I've never seen this behaviour with any package upgrade before.

I've located the problem. I had previously upgraded xserver-xorg-core from the Experimental repository, and it was incompatible with the xserver-xorg-video-radeon upgrade because it contained xorg-video-abi-20 instead of the required xorg-video-abi-15. I've now downgraded xserver-xorg-core, and all is well. Thank you again for your kind advice.

I've just upgraded the packages libgudev-1.0-0, libudev1 and udev to version 208-6. When I reboot, the process hangs on "waiting for /dev to be fully populated", for about 20 seconds. This never happened before the upgrade. I wonder what's going on, please? I tried setting GRUB to give verbose output, but this resulted in so much detail that I don't know what to make of it. Many thanks.

LMDE is abandoned. you might be the last one who use LMDE+sid. I'm afraid that no one can help you in this forum. please go to siduction thread instead :3

anyway, grub only used to load the kernel so that you can turn on your system. you won't get much information from grub. instead of it, check your bootlog. it record anything from grub until your desktop is ready. I'm quite sure that the culprit it systemd update on today. https://tracker.debian.org/news/558376

my suggestion is try to downgrade systemd into 204.

Thanks. I've been able to downgrade all the related packages to 204 from Testing, and the problem has disappeared.

I hadn't heard about the death of LMDE! It's true that my system is closer to Siduction these days.

I had a boatload of problems with LMDE SID when debian went to systemd. But a new install of 'Spark Linux' with systemd works perfectly. So will re-visit LMDE-SID. If a new iso is not released soon (should be). I'll improvise..

it might not die yet but it definetely on the verge of dying. the mass migration to other distro is one of the reason but the biggest reason for LMDE+sid death would be LMDE migration into debian stable. when it happened this forum will officially die.

anyway, it surely fun to play around here. it's sure my pleasure to meet all of you. too bad that but lots of user can't stand the historical lack of commitment on LMDE so that most of us is already move to another distro. it's still a nice place to discuss what happened on sid (that's why I'm still around here :3) but it's not a place for looking a solution for you breakage anymore. don't worry, I'll be still around here till this forum officially die :3

Perhaps when LMDE goes stable a few folks will decide they prefer something more cutting edge and come to LMDE tracking SID and have some fun..

I updated the OP to make it more up to date. The links to other Debian SID forums are still valid I think, and they are very good. Any distro BASED on Debian SID is bound to have info that we don't.

Some may ask why use an LMDE based on SID, rather than just say using 'Siduction'. In a word (er, two words...

..) the community here. Its always been the best.

d-u today...

reboot and found it took more than 3 minutes to boot
the longest record.....
much worst than booting a 11-yr old presario, which can boot within 60 seconds

see systemd-analyze data

dmesg has a jump from 12 seconds to 103 seconds

One month later, now, fully-d-u , take in all the bugs, just to see what systemd did

xfce no longer has suspense and hibernate as in last post because of bugs.

I will admit to cheating. I installed a Debian Testing snapshot, then upgraded to Sid, then added Mint bits. The result is a rock stable fast booting system.

My apt sources looks like this ..

Is it LMDE? No. Is it pure Debian? No. Call it Debint. I add the bits of Mint I want and run Gnome Shell 3.12.2. I have a LMDE/Sid/Xfce4 secondary box as well. Cinnamon has never really worked on either. I could do some fancy apt-pinning but I prefer Gnome anyway.

Just my two cents worth.

ps I have an i3 2120, 8gb ram and a 256Gb SSD - cop this ....

I will not have a true LMDE SID either. Too hard until a new iso is released. Will use "Sparky" and like you add Mint repo and update to SID. Hopefully will do that very soon.

Yes, it hard to get a true LMDE tracking SID right now (too many pkgs to upgrade with breakages). Most of us use some other sort of Debian SID with Mint repo. It amounts much to the same thing, but without Mint adjustments, (Less issues in SID without them). You can add all the other Mint goodies and be good to go.
