neither do I. the gap between LMDE and testing is too far and it got worse if you move to sid. even if I have to use LMDE, the first thing I do will be removing most of mint stuff from my system.

LOL---looks like we have all "really" gone our own direction to have a "custom" install....I'm still tracking experimental 90+% of the time---I'll drop it out of my list about every week or so to see if a incremental update has come thru Sid (mostly perl will do that-waiting for the next big update & Sid pushes .somethings)...Experimental is still solid for me most of the time....& I do have a second install waiting in the wings if something mis-behaves ;)

I rarely D-U, just aptitude upgrade & watch for things that look "funny"...has kept me more or less out of trouble for the last several years.......

Stable at 3.12.2-3 "Should" start seeing 3.14 bits in about 2 months. Memory usage is down (haven't checked the real numbers-but feels like 200mb less)

I've got a brand new SID install.
(Based on Sparky Linux XFCE with Mint repo and goodies added. Also added Siduction main for future kernels,ET).

Code: Select all

gene@sid:~$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list

Upgrade from a newly updated Debian Testing to Debian SID went without one hitch. Re-boot and all appears fine..

I'm not really in the "inner" loop, but here's the short list for 3.14- https://wiki.gnome.org/ThreePointThirteen/Features

The big one as far as I'm concerned is the systemd integration....
When booted on systemd systems, we can use systemd to also manage parts of the user session. There are a number of benefits to this, but the primary one is to place each application in its own kernel cgroup. This allows gnome-shell to do application matching more reliably, and one can use resource controls to (for example) say Epiphany only gets 20% of system RAM.

Furthermore, this lays some fundamental groundwork for application sandboxing.
Yes....lower the RAM useage & protect the system.

I'll talk to some people & see what the Crystal Ball thinks..........

My systemd-analyze looks like:

LGA 2011 CPU running @ 3.8 16G ram & a Gigabyte motherboard.

On another topic: Gnome speed of development......I've been told that we need to pay attention to GUADEC 2014. "Looks" like there maybe a roadmap for Gnome 4 soon.....

Just on dual core or quad core. normal spindle-hard disk.. no SSD
not-bad in comparison with famous OS that boots in 40-55 seconds.

unlike GregE , i remember his is like less than 3 seconds.

Ya--Not bad---I boot a SSD, but load quite a bit of stuff--so Mine is "slow" for a SSD setup.....
You are looking good for a spinning disc....

The next round of systemd updates "should" make things a bit faster.....and Gnome 14 will have integration (cross-fingers) to make the desktop faster too....

Cinna-SID

Post by GeneC »

Well, I had to try...
Installed with no issues. Log out and back into Cinnamon (lightdm). A few tweaks.

Cinna-SID (Cinnamon 2.2 on top of Sparky/LMDE XFCE tracking Debian SID).. 8)
Image

Issues
1. Had to use gconf editor to change wallpaper.
2. Froze once when setting time

Something in today's DU (mesa?...systemd?) breaks Cinnamon 2.2 (the one from Debian, not the one from Mint--which has been broken in Debian Testing/SID for some time)...

Booting to XFCE DE works just fine..

Re-installing my Nvidia does not help.
