[SOLVED] Elyssa on 4GB Flash Drive (USB)

Post by EchoLynx »

As my subject states, I want to install Elyssa on a brand new (bought it less than 4 hours ago) 4G USB Flash Drive.

I tried to do it just like I would any other drive, but I got this error:
The installer encountered an error copying files to the hard disk:

[Errno 5] Input/output error

This particular error is often due to a faulty CD/DVD disk or drive, or a faulty hard disk. It may help to clean the CD/DVD, to burn the CD/DVD at a lower speed, to clean the CD/DVD drive lens (cleaning kits are often available from electronics suppliers), to check whether the hard disk is old and in need of replacement, or to move the system to a cooler environment.
But this is odd as it is a brand new drive! It SHOULDN'T have any errors... as for the ambient room temp- 78F. And the drive itself is cool to the touch. What gives?

ian505, I don't think you can install mint on a usb drive as you would any other drive.

They arn't seen by the system as a hard drive.

But there are some great tutorials on http://www.pendrivelinux.com
including some for mint5.

This is what I used and my drive works great.
Got a 8gb microSD.

Wow... wouldn't that be cool! A whole OS (or 2) on something smaller than your fingernail! :-)

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a guide for Mint 5 using the live CD, though I did find a guide for installing via windows - which I am doing right now.

It worked! Thanks silver-one! Here is the guide I used : http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/10/31 ... /#more-270

EDIT- Please note this guide REQUIRES Windows for install, and is only the equivalent of having a LiveCD on a stick- no persistence whatsoever.

Hi Echolynx,

I managed to get Linux working on a pen drive AND allow settings/data to be saved. Have a read of this

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrive ... (pendrive)

for some ideas. This particular link refers to Ubuntu but maybe there will be some ideas you can try which will allow a fully featured version of Mint to be installed instead of Ubuntu.

Here is another link you might like to check out.

There is a post I made year or so ago when I was in your position and looking for help and while I eventually got it working OK, the whole exercise lossed its 'gloss' when someone pointed out that the number of rewrite cycles to the swap partition is likely to exceed the USB drive in a short time. I don't know how accurate this is but I then looked at these babies but haven't investigated any further....

Good Luck.
