how are yall doing I am new here and new to linux mint and any linux products lol i had a few old pcs and wanted to try something new since i'm so sick of paying for an key for windows, it can get costly when you have like 3 or more computers lol. name's joe i am williing to learn and learn from my mistakes, so linux is great so far - i like the baisc style that comes with linux mint 17

i too run old equipment, I have a 5 yr old dell laptop running Mint 64 bit cinnamon, a desktop 10 ys old also running mint 64 cinnamon, an ACER laptop only capable of running Mint 32 bit mate desktop, a spare tower running mint 32 mate,ans a zg5 netbook running peppermint lxde desktop.

Here are my impressions of what Linux does better than Windows:
It does not come preloaded on the system with massive bloatwares. It makes much better use of system resources. It has natural immunity to most malwares and does not need a virus scanner.
It does not need to be defragmented. You do not have to search the web for software to download from untrusted sources, hoping they are free of malware, adware,viruses, backdoors, and etc.,
hoping they will work without bugging your other files and programs, hoping they will work at all, and knowing that they most likely will leave garbage behind when uninstalled.
Linux pdates almost NEVER require a reboot as in Windows where you often find updates for the installed updates. All my systems are very stable. I can get tech support without jumping through a lot of hoops, without service contracts, warranty, or other charges. People here are most definitely more informed than outsourced tech supports and they are willing to share. The OS is is free and open-source. And there is sooooo much more...
My only regret is that I was too single-minded and did not venture from a well known path many years sooner.
