Team Fortress 2 Steam won't launch properly

Post by GosuSan »

Hey there,

i have a problem with launching TF2 on my LMDE 17 (Cinnamon):

Without -novid start parameter it won't start at all.

With this parameter it stars up, but won't load the main menu, it's stuck on the loading screen.

Some more information:

Up to date Steam and TF2, tried Steam beta too.
Up to date Graphics driver (not latest, but repo-latest)
Console-Log from starting Steam until game won't launch:

Thanks in Advance!

PS: I intentionally did not post this in the steam forums,
because I don't really think they can help me as good as this community can.

EDIT: I figured out it is a sound problem, TF2 works with -nosound parameter
I kinda fixed this line (it doesn't appear anymore)

Code: Select all

AL lib: pulseaudio.c:612: Context did not connect: Zugriff verweigert
With this
But the game still won't work without -nosound parameter (what kinda sucks, because ... well, no sound ;D)

Hi,

let's have a look

Code: Select all

inxi -Gxz
and

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"

Thanks for your answer!

Just to mention it, I had a little success, the problem is, I don't really know anymore what exactly I did...
The success is, the game now starts (without -nosound) but there still is no sound. So the game launches... but gaming without sound still kinda sucks :D

inxi -Gxz

Code: Select all

X.Org: 1.14.3 driver: nvidia
that is strange X.Org is 1.15.1 in Mint 17 did you downgrade drivers for your GTX 660?

Not really ... or ... not intentionally though... I assume I got Mint 17 because it is the latest version, and I installed the latest one about 3-4 weeks ago.
It is not the standard Mint though, it's LMDE like I said above.

oups my bad this is LMDE testing, well drivers are not really so stable on testing and cinnamon is also a bit flaky (because it's using bleeding edge development)
On top of that add wine and an emulation for graphic and sound..... bang you have material for a bug report but no sound.

I am not THAT good in linuxing but I have to disagree:

- debian-testing is still really stable especially when you compare it with other testing-distros.
- cinnamon is (afaik) just a fork of gnome 2, so i think "bleeding edge development" is a little bit over the top.
- There is no wine involved. Steam and TF2 are native on Linux for some time now.

Re: Team Fortress 2 Steam won't launch properly

testing is "testing" whereas stable is stable https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debi ... ng.en.html
cinnamon on debian is also testing, stable was offered through ppa but has been retired http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/05/ubun ... pa-retired

steam is a front end for wine https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=19444

But if you prefer LMDE cinnamon don't expect too many games to run on it, that's why I use Mate or Xfce as dual boot for games.

Okay, you might be right with the first two points, but definately not with the third.

Sure, you can run steam inside of wine too but there is a native client too.

I take in consideration changing the distro then... Thanks.

Re: Team Fortress 2 Steam won't launch properly

Post by PatH57 »

it's a native package but it uses wine (modified off course) as does play on linux or winetricks.
The game was developed with the half life 2 engine and steam provides a portage to linux.

I am also unable to get any games to launch in Steam. I'm running LMDE 64 bit with Cinnamon. Fresh install + nvidia driver and libgl1-nvidia-glx:i386 .

My inxi output also shows X.org:1.14.3

Code: Select all

inxi -Gxz:
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF104 [GeForce GTX 460] bus-ID: 01:00.0 X.Org: 1.14.3 driver: nvidia Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version: 4.3.0 NVIDIA 319.72 Direct Rendering: Yes
Did you ever find a full resolution?

try Mint 17, it comes with xorg 1.15.1, a newer kernel 3.13 (running a 3.15.10 on mine) and you could use the xorgedgers drivers to get the latest drivers compatible with your graphic card.

Re: Team Fortress 2 Steam won't launch properly

Post by TuxCapacitor »

Although I appreciate the response, it seems strange to suggest to someone asking for help (in the LMDE section no less) to go try Mint 17 instead of LMDE.
IF you are correct that it is using a later kernel AND Xorg by default then I am even more surprised.
I thought the intention, besides not being Ubuntu based, was to have more 'bleeding edge' updates?
PatH57

Re: Team Fortress 2 Steam won't launch properly

Post by PatH57 »

more 'bleeding edge' updates?
witch is true for software and desktop environment but not for kernel and drivers.
Ubuntu 14.04 and Mint 17 come with xorg 1.15.1 and kernel 3.13, check your LMDE.
To get the latest drivers for ATI or Nvidia to work correctly you need xorg to be at 1.15.1 (also it may install on 1.14 glitches are to expect)
Also this was a specific question on a native windows game trying to run under linux. Often it will run better on an "older" more stable platform then with the latest hw and drivers just because the code has had fixes that identified potential problems so in this particular case "latest is not always greatest"
