Hi all. Not a linux newbie but manners dictate an intro.

Post by crispytown »

Hi there fellow Linuxians,

I've been a Linux user since Mint 11 Katya (released 26 May 2011). I had tried Linux previously in the form of Ubuntu 8.04 (released 24 April 2008), but installation was unsuccessful and I returned to the Windows flock. I had thought then that Linux was Ubuntu only and was therefore dissuaded quickly. Many moons had passed since the 8.04 attempt and in about 2011 I became aware of the vitality and social responsibility of Open Source, not just in media but in life. I discovered this ironically through downloading the Peter Joseph Zeitgeist movies.

Through this epiphany, I discovered Linux Mint Katya and was successful in a dual boot scenario with my Windows installation. After a few years of using Windows as a crutch for Windows-centric hardware, I became completely proprietary software free, as there is always an open-source alternative plus the ability to figure things out for oneself or enlist support from the endless forums of Linux users. And the command line is fun, although I'm no guru.

Current OS & Hardware:
GNU/Linux Mint 17 Qiana Mate x64
Athlon X2 4800+
Asrock 939 SLI32-eSATA2
Gigabyte HD7750OC
2GB Samsung DDR400 RAM
WD 320GB with LUKS encryption

This hardware is circa 2005, except for the graphics card and proof that one does not require the "latest and greatest" for an adequate computing experience. It also proves the fairly low overhead required for GNU/Linux OSes.

About me:
Avid Linux user.
Volunteer in the Disability and Aged Care sector.
Volunteer at my local Makerspace in the computer sector.
Proponent for anything Open-Source or that makes the Universe a better place.

Viva Linux.
Viva Open-Source.
Namaste.
