Editing PDF files in Linux

Hi,

I have two questions in one.
  • How do you install a program to Linux that you have downloaded to a folder? This particular file is a PDF editor and is a tar.bz2.
  • Beyond that, can anyone recommend a good PDF editor, like for filling forms and then printing them?

This'll be a source program.

Source programs are to be compiled ,and become usable only after compilation.
During this process binaries get created ,and links to required program libraries are set.

This might however deviate sometimes,depending how the coder created it. Usually all the instructions how to compile are in the readme file inside the tar.bz2 archive file.

Okay, I started compiling, but I get this error:

checking if zlib is wanted... configure: error: libz not found

I tried doing apt-get install zlib and libz, and neither work. In Synaptic there are a bunch of different libz and zlib entries. Any ideas?

Libre Office Writer will edit some pdf's but won't others. I use a pdf print program in Firefox and the resulting file can be seen and used by others, but LO Writer seems to have problem with those. Still, when it works, it does a good job.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
