I have never heard of this before, but I don't think restarting X would help with anything. X is a window manager, and as far as I can tell, has nothing to do with reading DVDs. (so says the newbie)

Well X has nothing to do with playing DVDs - correct
But if you restart X all apps that rely on X are also restarted, so it's a "semi-boot"

I've had success recently using k9copy and getting it to make an iso of the dvd and then burning the iso with Brasero.
