I installed Linux Mint on my computer on Thursday, and I thought I'd introduce myself on these forums. I've actually been using Linux (Mint and Ubuntu) on and off for the past 4 years or so, but this time round I intend to learn about it more deeply. I'm currently taking the new edX "Introduction to Linux" MOOC and I'm now on the 7th chapter. I've enjoyed the course so far and already feel like I've learnt a lot.
More about me - I'm a 30 year old woman from Norwich, England and I work as a Java web developer for a local media company. I've always been interested in technology - my family's first ever computer was a ZX Spectrum and I discovered BASIC programming when I was about 6 or 7 years old. At work we use Windows servers so I don't get a chance to practise any Linux skills there (I'm just a junior employee so I have no say on what technology is used). Nevertheless I really enjoy my job and I feel like I'm always learning something new.
I believe very much in open source technology and it fits in very well with my beliefs about freedom in general. Any programs or scripts I write in my free time, I release under the GPL v3 licence. I always try to use open source software where possible. I'm also very much a fan of Android (also based on Linux of course)!
For about 10 years or so, I’ve enjoyed creating open source scripts and programs in my spare time. I started off by creating my own blogging script and simple CMS using PHP and MySQL. I also created my own HTML templates and WordPress themes. More recently I’ve been learning to create native Android apps in Java and I developed my own mobile game.
Is anyone here a member of the Linux Foundation or the Free Software Foundation? If so, do you find it useful? I'm considering joining one or the other.
I hope everyone is having a good day and I look forward to learning more and sharing what I know.
