And DVD burner will just work
But Lightscribe is a proprietary HP solution. You can find a HP program for it here

Anthony,

I have a Lightscribe drive in one of my boxes, and I found the following reference that talks about how to get it working. I've followed these steps in the hopes of being able to burn a disc image, but so far I haven't been successful. The software installs OK and recognizes the drive, but I'm bumping into some other sort of error in that it doesn't seem to think I have a Lightscribe media inserted...

Maybe this will work for you, though. Post a follow up with your results.

Reference: http://onlyubuntu.blogspot.com/2008/05/ ... buntu.html

1. Download the needed pieces:
wget http://download.lightscribe.com/ls/ligh ... -intel.deb (current as of 2008/06/09)
wget http://uploads.mitechie.com/lightscribe ... 6_i386.deb

2. Install the two packages (order matters):
sudo dpkg -i lightscribe-1.14.17.1-linux-2.6-intel.deb
sudo dpkg -i 4l_1.0-r6_i386.deb

3. Fix the missing library problem:
sudo mkdir /usr/lib32/
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/liblightscribe.so.1 /usr/lib32/
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/liblightscribe.so /usr/lib32/
sudo ldconfig

4. Run it:
sudo 4L-gui

I use the Lightscribe system software directly from http://www.lightscribe.com. The current deb package is "lightscribe-1.14.17.1-linux-2.6-intel.deb" and installs as any deb package. IMPORTANT: This package must be installed before any other lightscribe software. To actually use Lightscribe, a labeling package such as Simple Labeler or 4L-gui from Lacie must be installed. DON'T INSTALL BOTH! DAMHIKT! Simple Labeler is just that - a very simple bit of text on the label. I normally use 4L-gui and import the text or picture as a .jpg file.

Re: Lightscribe solved

Hi all.

I need to unsolve this!!

basically Ive had to re install Mint 5 for various reasons. Im now attempting to set up a NEW lighstcribe (external) drive. However when i follow the links and attempt to download the . deb package, I get an error message saying I need to alter something under preferences. It says: /tmp/lightscribe-1.14.32.1-linux-2.6-intel-3.deb could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

Anyhow, my system seems resistant to downloading either the .deb or the RPM package on the lightscribe site.

Is there anything I can do?

Ant.
