Re: anyone here use hd-parm?
hd-parm is an efficient way to produce a 5.25 inch paperweight ...
Unless you really know what you are doing don't play with it
It's to my knowledge the only software that reliably can destroy hardware

Re: anyone here use hd-parm?
Some research over at the ubuntu forums would help you more.
Just to note my laptop hd clicks like mad without hdparm setup, the clicks are it parking, my drive would have died long ago with hdparm.
hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda is what does it for me.
Husse is right in a way that it can kill your drive IF done wrong, but, advising to look into it further seems more appropriate that scaring the s*it out of someone.

Andy Mack,
Speaking of research, you might want to take a look at the thread below regarding laptop issues and file system operation.

I was responding to the original question if you could get more out of your disk with hdparm
This was not a discussion of some specific problems that most definitely are solved by hdparm
