I have been racking my brains out trying to get my sound back. I had a problem with it when i first installed linux mint 5 and was able to fix it with this wonderful thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578 However something happened recently (i have no idea what) that has muddled it up again and this time that thread isnt helping!

Any ideas how to get my pulseaudio/sound to work currectly again?

i think it has something to do with my update to Linux 2.6.24-19-386

i just want my sound back!!! the last thing i want to do is reinstall linux.... that is such a microsoft cop-out

You may wish to roll back to the original kernel for Mint. I know a friend of mine did the Level 4 and 5 updates just for experimentation, thereby getting a new kernel. His sound no longer worked. He rolled back, and all returned to normal for him. You might want to consider trying that first. Good luck.

DAMMIT. So i ended up reinstalling and that fixed it of course... but a few updates later AND THIS TIME I DID NOT UPDATE TO A NEW KERNEL. DID NOT DIS-UPGRADE ANYTHING.... gone. back to no sound. i am soooooo irked

nevermind. The level is just really low for some reason. i can barely here it and it is at max volume. lame

If you have sound, although it is very low, you may need to adjust the volume sliders in the Pulse Audio controls. I fiddled with my settings in Sound and set my devices for Pulse Audio. There is the Pulse Audio Volume Control listed under the Sound and Video menu (but I think you have to enable it via Main Menu) that might need to be set properly. Also, in your panel Volume Control, you may wish to verify you have levels set as you prefer. This really appears to be a slider adjustment someplace. Once you get Pulse Audio figured out, you can share with the rest of us! :D Good luck!

Yea i realized i had to fiddle with the default Volume Control. Still not as high as it used to be in past Ubuntus or in windows which is weird. PulseAudio has been the bane of my existence for the last 2 months. I respect what it is for and everything, i just wish their was an easier way. it would be nice if the next version of mint implemented an easier method oif Installing, Fixing, and Recovering sound.

Well, as long as you have decent sound and can crank the volume up just a tad more, you are still way ahead of the folks who have absolutely no sound at all. The positives certainly outweigh the negatives by a very wide margin.

I cannot complain at all about my sound in Mint. Everything simply works.

Recently, I have noticed that with the same volume level settings, my secondary machine (with different hardware, but the same software) has slightly higher sound output. I use the same set of speakers with both machines (I swap the plug). Now, on that same secondary machine, when I run openSUSE KDE 4.1, I have to turn the volume down since the Phonon sound in KDE is radically different than GNOME. So, not only are there Pulse Audio/Phonon differences, but the audio cards make a difference, as well. All have very good sound, just varying audio levels. I can certainly live with that. Keep fiddling. :D
