Well, here's a copy of mine from Mint where I'm triple booted with Win XP, Ubuntu Hardy, and Mint Elyssa, with Mint Elyssa booted, but with Hardy set as default boot in Startup Manager (oh and Startup manager is also set to save two kernels, that's why Hardy shows two kernels):
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
# grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
# and /usr/share/doc/grub-legacy-doc/.

OK, i put this into grub:

title Mint 5
root (hd2,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/sdb2/
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic

it started booting but got stuck at:

attached scsi generic sg5 type 0

any idea why its getting stuck? should i just reinstall it?

You should edit it to look like this:

Code: Select all

title Mint 5
root (hd2,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=/dev/sdb2
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-16-generic
savedefault
boot

attached scsi generic sg5 type 0
Looks like it's problems with a usb device(thumbdrive or hard drive).

now with the savedefault line i get:
error 15: file not found

maybe it does have to do with the usb, the drive with grub on it that im booting from is a usb drive, it has sabayon and opensuse on it. im using sabayons grub. i can boot everything, sabayon, opensuse, xp, osx86, but not linux mint.

here is my current grub:

Code: Select all

Normally this happens when you aren't telling it the right partition to boot from.

Well Sabayon has root (hd0,2), and openSUSE has rootnoverify (hd0,0).
Shouldn't Mint's be root (hd0,1)?

it actually is working now, its not getting stuck, i was able to login and its working now...strange, but thanks for all the help, i would have been able to get that far without it.
