Does updates have mplayer plugins for firefox?

Post by nooby »

I have linux mint on CD and it says there are 104 updates to download.
I'm using a live cd so not use doing it cause I can't save these updates
but it would be good to know if they have the latest mplayer plugins installed
or if one still have to do those complicated things to get them installed.

Does anybody know if that includes the mplayer plugins for firefox?

I found this link on ubuntu forum. Is that the same as for mint?

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=540412

it is updated for hardy 8.04
mozilla-mplayer plugin for firefox: BBC, CBC and Stage6 streaming videos micro-howto

I barely get what they tell me to do there. too complicated if one never down such things.
One doesn't get what they talk about. But if the updates include all that without needing
to do all these cli stuff that would be nice.

I would personally avoid apt as much as possible and simply stick with Synaptic Package Manager.

I'd at least begin by simply installing
mozilla-mplayer
which also pulls in
mplayer
and
mplayer-skins
If that still doesn't work for you then I'd try uninstalling
totem-mozilla
If that doesn't work then remove all 3 mplayer packages you just installed and instead try
mozilla-plugin-vlc
which pulls in a number of vlc packages, libraries, etc. (keep track of these so you can revert if desired).

Hi

I agree with Kansasnoob that it is easier to keep clear of apt. I have checked the live cd and the BBC streamed video works fine but there does not seem to be any way to get nbc or cbc video streams to work as both are using silverlight and this will not work with mplayer or even with wine.

To check what updates are included in mint update scroll through the list after booting up the application (the padlock icon on the right hand side of the bottom panel). You can then select any that you want to install or check what is being updated.

The good point that I find with Mint is that there is normally a gui way of changing most things as well as the traditional method of using the terminal.

Hope this helps.

Thanks indeed guys, sorry for delay in answering.
I'm not sure what to do. Would be cool to add Linux Mint to
my smal lcollection fo installed progs but as a damn newbie
I have no trust in my ability to install things.

I've tried that with many distros and it always fails.
So I wait doing it until my self esteem get higher. :)

I doubt that you are such a newbie if you have all the list of distros installed on your box.

If you enjoy the Mint live cd why not pluck up the courage and install Mint. It will give you the option of where to boot from but if you know how to edit your menu.lst then I am sure you won't have any problems.

Go for it!!!!!!!
