XFCE CE Release Update

Post by merlwiz79 »

Ok, didn't do a lot of work this week, it was our anniversary.
This is what i have been doing on the XFCE CE release.

I started with extracting RC(beta 025) and just rebuilding it on my install.(clem made this iso)
Then installed it and tested for the login problem about a dozen of times.
It worked just like the 025 beta no problems.
Then I installed 1 update and built a new iso and tested it.
It worked and added another update and built a new live cd.
Tested it about a dozen times and it worked fine.
I am currently through half the updated packages and it still works fine.
Hopefully when I finally install the last package, it will still work like it is suppose to.
If not I will find what causes the problem in the 1st place.

I'm estimating I have about 5 more live cds to create and test.
Then I should have one for exploder to test.
So far the problem hasn't shown up and no new ones either.

Hi

I installed the version that is under community in 5 at HEAnet. Not sure if that is the final or what Clem and you have been working on.

I ran into problems with wicd . There is no longer an option to disable it in autostarted apps just the ability not to load the system tray icon. The wicd applet still searches for a wireless connection every few seconds and causes unecessary cpu usage ( esp for a lightweight distro ). I removed wicd and installed the gnome network manager and no searching for wireless networks but it caused issues with shutting down / restarting. Would it be possible to have the ability to have the wicd autostart option included again ?. I can handle zombie processes ( previous version of wicd ) but the constant network polling with the current version is a bit irritating. Although this computer is far from new there will be other users putting it on much lower hardware specs and with wired only connections and chances are their experience will be the same as mine.

Files copied from cd's / removable media to the hard drive do not have the correct permissions. It's something I have seen on Ubuntu and Mint 5 Gnome. It was not present on the xfce beta.

Vlc doesn't keep the settings for Audio Output Module after they have been saved.

Firefox doesn't handle domain suffixes the normal way of using .com by default when there is no suffix indicated. Try something like http://www.spotnet and it changes it to http://www.spot.net and not http://www.spotnet.com .

Wicd is working fine here, even when connected to a wireless connection.
You could try this in terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd stop
Wicd forums might be able to help you.
http://wicd.net/punbb/viewforum.php?id=2
If not get 1.4.2 from here https://sourceforge.net/project/showfil ... _id=229460
Then look here for the autostart info. http://wicd.sourceforge.net/wiki/doku.php?id=faq

I always have problems with permissions from a read only files/folders and especially on a NTFS drive.

VLC saved my settings after I clicked save.
Check the file /.vlc/vlcrc for aout= and make sure there is no # in front of it.

Not sure what happen in the updated version of Firefox, but I get this in Gnome as well.

Great new re the impending XFCE release.

Just a brief post to flag a "bug" that I had forgotten about (ie not serious). The Gnome power manager 2.22.1 that puts up an icon showing the power supply status has a small issue that needs fixing.

It needs an event to change the icon from mains to battery. When Mint XFCE boots it appears that no event is recognized and hence I get a battery power icon and notification. If I invoke an event by removing and replacing the power lead the icon changes to correctly report the power source.

Oh and Mint update is still not working automatically for me.

Otherwise this OS is the best I have found to date.
