Reworking of possible new logo

Postby carlos on Sun Mar 11, 2007 8:16 am

Last Update: Taking some of the last feedback, some of the logos were updated to be thinner or to make new combinations. Also #22 has been flattened out so its more of a pure logo.

Another update Added a couple more logos based off of earlier feedback. Also unimagination's excellent logo version has been added.

UPDATE: Added a couple more logo ideas with some of the new feedback, plus NiksaVel's version.

Ok ladies and gents. I hope everybody is enjoying their weekend. A little back story for those not aware. Thanks to NiksaVel re-invigorating and trying to nail down the artwork specs Clem has finally given good feedback on the original logo concept that I've created. So here is the result of long hours of going back and reworking what was created.

One of the important things to remember is that this is the core shape of a logo its simplest form. If its accepted as a logo, later on when we have finished producing guidelines, other artists will be able to embellish it as they wish. You can see an example of embellishment with the bold white border on the logos. Later on I will more styling such as shadows, gradients and different color versions. So please keep that in mind.

So my faves at this point are #'s 4, 13 and 16.

#4 is a rework of the original logo I created, which I still feel very partial to. Its a bit softer not as cold feeling, but still very cutting edge and new.

#13 is very organic and is a representative of what a mint leaf looks like. Its simple and elegant and probably more symbolic.

#16 Might be a push for some people, but I really like it. It's the initials of the distro but its design somewhat mimics a loose drawing of a fist which is usually associated with freedom. The L representing the thumb the M representing the knuckles and below the are united together (such as a community) to form the whole fist.

At this point if we decide to go with something else the customized font for "Linux Mint" probably will not match a different type of logo. And the name will need a new font styling.

I hope you all like one so we can proceed further with nailing standards down.

Time for me to catch some sleep. Cheers!

Hi Carlos,

I personally vote for 16... integrated in #3's leaf
Is it possible?

very nice work carlos...

personaly, I would change the #16 a bit by lowering the M part just a couple of pixels... thus making the L stand just a bit more.... it kinda looks like disco music titles this way :)

It might look good inside a leaf... but for some reason I like #2 much better than #4...

#4 somehow reminds me of an iron :D

Ha! Niksa your so right I keep seeing the iron now, lol. I'll try your recommendation on the LM "fist" logo.

AlsaPhil, I actually tried that, just forgot to put that in here. Hopefully sometime after breakfast I'll add that on here.

maybe it might look good to lower the m part so that it completely touches the lower line originating from L... somethink like Lm :?

I wish people would comment more on the logo issue... I'd really like that we get to a decision so I could work on the rest of the artwork.....

clem you think you might make a closed thread where you could just post the suggestions you like and put a poll and link that page from the linuxmint.com? Sorta like make a new news item on the page asking everyone to participate in the future of linux mint....

Update: This artwork has been added above.

Ok here is the combo of the 2 logos that I didn't have in the above mock-ups. AlsaPhil

NiksaVel I tried your recommendation. Its not bad with the "L" being higher I could go with either or. Although your 2nd recommendation about having the "M" on top of the line, didn't work out so well. Kinda made it look like a factory. I'll try to send you an svg hopefully tomorrow.

I'm completely with you about your last posting. I still like the original logo the most (As do alot of designers that I have shown it to), although the "freedom fist" could be a possible replacement.

The the fact of the matter is, even though its a free re-branding, its doesn't mean Clem needs to accept it. Even though I might disagree with his taste on this  I can't imagine him wanting to keep something he doesn't completely appreciate.

Although we did have a lot of comments on my original logo posting and I think its safe to say that those in the community that commented, liked what they saw, it was never made official by Clem.

So maybe it would be a good idea to either have Clem approve one or have the community agree on what they like. Like this we can proceed with the artwork guidelines and I can finish coding the website and start up some theming. BTW In case anybody wants to see how the site is going take a look here. http://mint.designdrifter.com/ Mind you its early in the coding stages. Doing it on what spare time I have.

Hopefully more people and Clem will chime in. I think the branding will become more of an issue when the support section starts to get busier for Clem.

Cheers everybody!

logos

Postby euthypro on Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:10 am

Someone once said that a camel is a horse designed by a committee, so while I've followed these threads, I find I have nothing to contribute except an uninformed opinion. My tendency is to let the designers design. Maybe the artists can put out a small number of designs, (two or three?) and let the community vote, keeping in mind that this distro is Clem's creation and baby. That way you might please the most people, or at least displease the least.

Carlos' original design seemed quite good to me. The leaf submitted by NiksaVel and pronounced "cool" by Clem is also good, but I'll agree with Carlos that it's too derivative. Of the latest ones, I like #3. It looks soft and simple. And now that I've given my opinion, you can feel free to ignore it and do what ever you think best. I promise not to sulk.

Great work, guys.

Regards,

Angel

Without any claim at designing, I'd say that my favorite of the three challengers is the second one. More green on it.

I've had a look at the new site. Very clean, fresh, and nice to look at.

Now I have an idea of the amount of work involved... I cannot really help but at least I can encourage you!

Thank you Carlos! :) :) :)

This is a great way to work Carlos, I love the way you brought so many ideas to choose from. I made your post a global announcement by the way and I'll talk about it in the newsletter. Hopefully we'll get a lot of community feedback on this.

I can see 4 groups of logos:

- #1 to #4 (LM_Leaf logos). I think the shape in #3 and #4 is too stretched and it does make me think of an iron :) #2 is probably the best in this group, the white adds to it, and on a white background it could be bordered by a thin black line.

- #4 to #10 (the Helicopter group). #8 is the nicest in my opinion.

- #11 to #14 (the leaf group). I like it better when on the side, and the white adds to it so my favorite here is #13.

- #15 tp #16 (the thai script group). They have a strong logo identity. It kinda looks like thai scripting though..

My favorite group is the leaf one so my overall vote goes for #13.

Here are my impressions on some of the logos:

- #2: Very neat. Classy and strong identity. A bit cold.
- #8: Very nice. More fun than #2, maybe a bit surcharged though.
- #13: Nice and simple. My favorite so far.
- #15: Great logo (strong identity) but could be mistaken with some Thai ( http://simply-thai.com/images/thai_cons.gif ) and is not as "fun" as #8 and #13.
