Hi Jeff13,

thanks for the help.

I think like you I will continue running the folding on the 18.3 and then switch to the new Cinnamon, as there are some things that 18.3 cannot do.

Hi Jeff13,

I have looked at my folding points and they are really very low. I looked in the log file and see that Cuda is not found.

I have tried to download the Cuda driver, but this version of Firefox in 18.3 does NOT follow all links and I am unable to select and download anything. Firefox does not allow me to log into Patreon or Amazon among other things. The links just appear blank or do not work at all.

I found the web page to download Cuda so I made a text file with the link on it and transferred it to my latest Cinnamon. Shut down 18.3.

Booted Cinnamon and and opened the link and downloaded the .deb file which I then dragged over into 18.3. Shut down Cinnamon and opened 18.3 and run the .deb file. I now have Cuda installed.

I will have to see if Cuda is found on the next work unit upload. Maybe that will help the points

Best regards Keith

Hi Keith;

Your numbers look great so I assume you have Cuda working. I'm still folding on the 525 series driver btw. Any time I try to upgrade to 535 whether on 19.3 or 21.2 it fails miserably. Is the GPU temp still under control?

Hi Jeff13

I made so many efforts and mistakes trying to run Folding At Home both on 18.3 and also on 19.1, so in the end I just gave up.

I decided to invest in a new GPU and purchased a RTX 4070ti.

I installed the latest Cinnamon and then installed all of the updates.

I then looked at the nvdia driver and there were none listed at all, it said that I did not need any as I was up to date. I needed to install the latest nvidia driver which was the 535, so I installed it from a terminal and to the best of my memory I did

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-535 nvidia-dkms-535

I shut the computer down and then started it up again and looked in the drive manager and the 535 was installed.

I decided that I would try the new Folding at Home version 8. Very easy to set up and it was running straight away. I have no problems at all with it and have NO time lost waiting for a new unit. I think that it is very nice and suits me. As to the points I will have to wait and see how it settles down.

When I run nvidia-smi most of the output is missing
When I run nvidia-settings I get
keith@keith-Z97X-UD5H-BK:~$ nvidia-settings

(nvidia-settings:132481): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 22:40:43.075: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
** Message: 22:40:43.240: PRIME: No offloading required. Abort
** Message: 22:40:43.240: PRIME: is it supported? no

no idea what a Glib-Gobject is or if it matters at all.

Other than that the computer is running OK.

talk to you again

Intrinsic ,

and there are another two that we can take within the week, all being well. I wonder if we will ever get below 100.

Hello
Tried to install fahcontrol. Received the following message:
"dependency is not satisfiable python"
Did some internet searching, but no luck finding a solution so far.

The viewer and the web control are running. Not sure if the fahcontrol is needed.

Right now the cpu is busy. All cores are running at 75-80C. The stock cooler is busy!

Was hoping to use my GPU Nvidia RTX 3060. Still trying to figure out how to use the gpu.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Welcome professor;

It's not clear whether you downloaded the files for the version 7 client/control or the version 8 beta. If it was the version 7, that version needs Python 2 to work, but mint 21.x ships with python 3. Mixing python versions is way over my head. I was never able to get V7.x to work in mint 20 or 21. I'd suggest you scoll up 7 or 8 posts in this thread for Tinca's post made on Oct 14 about using the beta.

As far as the GPU, it's possilble that your 3060 hasn't been whitelisted yet. The FAH support forum has this thead to help with that.

The old control software needs several old dependencies that aren't in the standard repo to work. Rather than install those older packages (which you can do if you really want to) I'd suggest removing the old back end:
sudo dpkg -P fahclient
and then installing the new beta version from here:
https://foldingathome.org/beta/?lng=en
The new beta version only has one software package that includes the back end and the control, which is done by going to: https://app.foldingathome.org/ in your browser once it's installed. From there you can easily set your GPU to fold and enter the Linux Mint team number.

A link to the official beta info:
https://foldingathome.org/foldinghome-v ... de/?lng=en

I was hesitant of the beta at first, but it seems sold, and it's even easier to use than the old FAH control is, so I highly recommend trying that route.

Thanks to both of you. I will give it a go later today or tomorrow. :D

Once this gets sorted I plan to put folding at home on my Windows PC (RTX 2070 Super), an older MAC (2 core cpu!) and a ten year old PC ( XFCE - GT 1030).

It is winter here in North Dakota, I need to keep the house warm.

Version 8 is now working. Thanks for the help.

One minor glitch with Ver 8. It did not recognize my GPU and gave an error in log.
14:05:29:E :Exception: Failed to open dynamic library 'libOpenCL.so': libOpenCL.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Found the solution here
https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php? ... g&start=15

Code: Select all
sudo systemctl stop fah-client
sudo systemctl start fah-client

Installed F@H on the second computer (ASUS ROG, Win 10, i7-9700F & RTX 2070S). When both computers are running the fans are loud and the basement room I am in goes from 72F to 74F. A new cooler for the i5-12400F might lower the noise level. Not much I can or want to do with the ASUS.

Two PCs to go....

Glad you got it working :)

It’s a fun way to add some heat to the house (I’m also in the northern hemisphere, and I’m also using Folding at Home as part of my heating)

It’s neat watching yourself slowly climb the Team's ranks (I see you’re currently in spot 115), and the Team climb the ranks overall (At our current pace, it appears that Linux Mint will end up being a top 100 team.)

I only fold on my GPUs, as the amount of daily points the CPU contributes is rather low by comparison. If the CPU fan noise is too annoying you might want to try doing the same. I don't like noise, and always buy overkill quite coolers for efficient lower power hardware.

While not necessary, I think you get bonus points if you have a pass key for your Folding at Home:

Up to 60 on the team! 8)

The fans are a bit loud. I measured 50 dB(A) with the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app. With no computers running the app shows 32 dB(A). No need to wear ear plugs yet. I have a pair of head phones if needed.

For now I reduced the cpu threads to 6 (out of 12) for i5-12400f and to 4 (out of eight) for i7-9700F. I5 is down to about 50% utilization and i7 is about 69%.
3060 - temp is about 70C, 99% utilization & 159 watts
2070S - is 83C, 90% & 170 watts.

The temps on i5 are still a bit high at 85-90C. Might turn off turbo mode in bios tomorrow. I told it to keep PL2 at 65 watts (max is 117 I think), but that does not seem to work.

I did get a pass key right away. Thanks for mentioning it.

Professor;

You might work with the terminal command nvidia-smi a bit. nvidia-smi -h will get you the help file on the program the driver contains. the command
nvidia-smi -pl=xxx (where xxx is a number you set) will help keep the GPU's cooler. As an example my mint 19.3 machine GPU runs at 50C using 193 watts of 270 max. I use the nvidia x server utility to set the fan speed to 92% to keep the fan noise down a bit. A percentage of between 70 and 85% for max power works well for me but you can play with it to balance heat/noise and performance to your liking.

Thanks for the info on nvidia-smi. It worked.

bob@bob-desktop:~$ sudo nvidia-smi -pl=100
[sudo] password for bob:
Power limit for GPU 00000000:01:00.0 was set to 100.00 W from 170.00 W.

Warning: persistence mode is disabled on device 00000000:01:00.0. See the Known Issues section of the nvidia-smi(1) man page for more information. Run with [--help | -h] switch to get more information on how to enable persistence mode.
All done.

I plan to run the command each time the PC is started for now. Will deal with the warning later.

Noise levels are OK. The CPU cores are around 60C and the GPU is also at 60C.

Going to switch my attention to getting folding on the other two PCs.
