Ubuntu to stop providing source codes?

Post by Lady Fitzgerald »

I just watched this about Ubuntu to stop releasing its source codes: https://youtu.be/FufN3c68nPg?t=653

Would this affect Mint development in any way?

The screenshot in the video indicates:

which says the Ubuntu source code will remain available. The change is about source ISOs.

No, this change will not affect Linux MInt.

Just guessing but I wouldn't think so.

I saw this, and I was not sure what the issue was, and so did not want to report it for fear of being accused of click bait.

"Source ISOs" is a legacy product, for the old days when internet download was so slow and clumsy that burning and distributing the software source through CD/DVD was more convenient than individual downloads for projects that we care.

We are long past that time now. Linux Mint doesn't have such "source ISOs" and all of us never notices.

p.s. Nowadays, if a user want to get the source of a software, it is extremely unlike they want to get the version included by the Linux distribution. One probably want the latest upstream version. Or even for debug purpose, the current version residing in mirror server. Definitely not the outdated version.

p.s.2 "Source ISOs" may be useful for archival purpose for librarians and historians. This is the remaining value I can think of.

SO I guess the question I have is; How do you get the source code for Linux? I know the devs have to have it in order to work on things, but where is it normally found?
