Black Screen with mouse pointer

Post by Cattivello »

Greetings,
I am facing a strange issue.
I write in the hardware section as I think is hardware related. But I am not sure.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad L480
I run Linux mint for years. Suddenly, since yesterday, when turning on, I get a Black Screen and a mouse. I can move the mouse.
I used Linux Mint V. 21.1 Cinnamon Kernel 5.15.0-100 generic
I noticed that if I start with 21.1 cinnamon kernel 5.15.0-97, I have no problems.

So I tried to update/upgrade to the latest Linux Mint 21.3. I notice the kernel remained 5.15.0-100 and again have a black screen.
But I have a screen if I start 21.3 with kernel 5.15.0-97!
It seems the issue is related to the kernel model.
Is it possible?
How that actually happened from a day to an other?
Can someone suggest me how to have the screen back when starting the default cinnamon version?
PS
I do have the login screen. All above mentioned is after I log in.
Thanks you

When using the 5.15.0-97 kernel, please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Going through the Changelog for 5.15 0-100 I do see references to some changes for the i915 driver, but I don't know if one of those applies to your situation. (I'm guessing at least one might given you see the change with the kernel version.) However, it's odd others have not (at least not yet) run into the same issue.

Have you tried the 6.5 kernel to see if it has the same problem? It's available in Update Manager.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
However, before you do that, I recommend you clean out this root partition. I'm surprised you were able to boot into your system with it that full unless it is somehow an anomaly because you have encryption of some type.

Hi SMG,
About the i915 driver... I have no idea. I read is a new driver that supports all graphic card on chip.
I have Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07).

You asked: "Have you tried the 6.5 kernel ".
No I did. I am a little afraid to install kernels that are not from the updates as I am afraid I get simply locked out.
I use a dual boot with windows as in some cases I need to test things in windows.
Do you think I can install it following your procedure and if something is not going well, I can fall back to the kernel 5.15.0-97 as I do now?

About my "/" root filled up. I dont know why is so full. When I do some maintenance I also noticed the red flag.. but I am not entirely sure how to clean it up.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

SMG,
maybe my root is filled up due to old kernels?
I figure I can clean that but I want to make sure I can keep the last working kernel. Is it possible?

About the i915 driver... I have no idea. I read is a new driver that supports all graphic card on chip.
I have Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07).
The i915 driver name is one Intel has been using for years. The name is not new. However, updates to the driver with that name happen on a regular basis.
Cattivello wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2024 4:20 amYou asked: "Have you tried the 6.5 kernel ".
Yes. You can boot with any installed kernel by selecting Advanced Options from the grub menu and then selecting your desired kernel from the list (select one without recovery mode after the name).

maybe my root is filled up due to old kernels?
Yes. The 5.4 kernels only apply for LM20 versions which is not what you are running so you can remove all of them.

We recommend you have your current working kernel and one or two older versions installed. You can delete all the rest. You can delete them either using Update Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (or the command line). If you need instructions, let us know.

So, i used Synaptic pac. manager and deleted those kernel I did not use and now it looks like that:

Code: Select all

ii linux-image-5.15.0-100-generic 5.15.0-100.110 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
rc linux-image-5.15.0-56-generic 5.15.0-56.62 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-5.15.0-97-generic 5.15.0-97.107 amd64 Signed kernel image generic
ii linux-image-generic 5.15.0.100.97 amd64 Generic Linux kernel image
But my partitions still looks like this:

Code: Select all

Partition:
  ID-1: / size: 833.86 GiB used: 805.54 GiB (96.6%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
  ID-2: /boot/efi size: 96 MiB used: 31.1 MiB (32.4%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1
  ID-3: /home size: 833.86 GiB used: 805.54 GiB (96.6%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
still using 96.6%
??
going to reboot now and I hope I will be back with better news

Re: Black Screen with mouse pointer

Post by Cattivello »

So, I have made progresses...
while we trying to solve my black scxreen with mouse, Linux mint gave me a new update that contained a new kernel: 5.15.0.101.98
This one works. I am in (so far)
Now the question is: What benefit I would have to install kernel 6.5?
I read quite a bit about it and I was tempted already. Do you you think is a good idea at this point to try it anyway?

Moreover, I noticed someting strange: My / partition and my home partition have the same size...
So I deleted some larger files in my Home, and I noticed now I have this:

Code: Select all

Partition:
  ID-1: / size: 833.86 GiB used: 799.09 GiB (95.8%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
  ID-2: /boot/efi size: 96 MiB used: 31.1 MiB (32.4%) fs: vfat dev: /dev/nvme0n1p1
  ID-3: /home size: 833.86 GiB used: 799.09 GiB (95.8%) fs: btrfs dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
I did free a little space.
It appear that my home partition affects the root partition. Is that even possible?

I think you need to clean that drive before adding anything more.

Are you using encryption of some type?

By the way, having 71 flatpaks installed is a LOT of flatpaks. Are you using all of them?

Not really!
I just issued this command : flatpak list --app
And I list: 30 app

To the question if I use encryption, I could not remember if I actually have originally choosen to encrypt my home.
So I used this site to verify if I use any LUKS and it not! (https://www.baeldung.com/linux/check-disk-encryption)

About cleaning the drive..
It seems that my / and Home is the same partition. I guess I have to delete or move files from my Home.

About the Kernel 6.5, will that be still a good improvement?

Okay, but are you using them? Flatpaks can take up more room than a "regular" software install.

To remove unused runtimes you can run:

Code: Select all

flatpak uninstall --unused --delete-data

That only checks for full disk encryption. It is possible as part of an install to encrypt just the home directory which is done with encryptfs.

There should not be any reason to do that. On a normal install, /home is part of the root directory and only the root directory shows in the inxi output.

However, you used btrfs instead of ext4 for your install. I don't know if somehow that might be a factor.

It's quite possible your full drive is causing the issue. It would not be the first time I have seen a full drive cause graphics issues.

I cant remember if I ever chosen to encrypt my drive back when I have installed linux mint (years ago).
I tend to say I did not! But again... if there is a way you can suggest I can figure that out, it would be great.
I guess a simple way would be to boot with a live version of linux and see if I can read my disk partition, right?

In all cases, what it shows now is that if I make space in my Home partition, my Root partition frees space too.
So, I got to the conclusion that either I have to delete/move data elsewhere or I have to buy a new larger m.2 storage.
Or do you see other ways to make space on my root?

I'd like to know why the two of those are changing in tandem. That is not what we usually see.

Yes, that is what I mean. And I got 50 GB free now. I must say that I think you right... probably I could not start due to little space left. However, I could login in the older kernel and upgrade the kernel to the next version I received by the updates.
