[SOLVED] No sound on TV via hdmi

Post by paut »

My Zotac Zbox CI343 doesn't give any sound when connected to my (not smart) Samsung TV through a hdmi cable (the TV set connects to an amplifier). What can be the cause? How can I test what' s wrong? Some system info:

Addition: when I connect the Zbox with the amplifier through a 3,5 mm headphone cable, there' s sound via the amplifier. The same when I plug in a headset with a 3,5 mm plug directly in the Zbox.

First, I would suggest opening Sound Settings -> Hardware. You probably also have a second device that is turned off. Plug the hdmi cable into the TV and set the turned off device to On to see if any sound will appear.

2. Your hardware is very new and needs a newer kernel. If my first tip doesn't help, try installing kernel 6.2, and if necessary 6.5 from Update Manager -> View -> Linux Kernels.

Hi @diabolicbg

How do I open the 'Sound Settings' dialog you showed in your post? I can only open the Sound dialog (without 'Settings'), and in the Sound dialog there's no 'On' button to turn on a device. Can I open the Sounds Settings in a Terminal window? How? (I'm new to Linux)

As for the newer kernel: I ran LM 6.5 from a live usb stick (linuxmint-21.3-cinnamon-64bit-edge.iso), and that didn't help. No sound.

I use MATE and you probably use Cinnamon. There might be a little difference, but you probably have a Sound icon at the bottom right of the clock. Right-clicking should offer a menu and from there, at least in MATE you enter the settings.

If there is no menu option from the volume icon, there must be volume settings in the Control Panel.

The only settings I see are these:

And there' s no ' Control Panel' in Cinnamon, as far as I can see.

Check what will happen if you mark Digital output and change the profile. I think the hdmi sound should be digital, not analog.

It doesn't make any difference if I select Digital output.

Hi again @diabolicbg

After I restarted my pc, the hdmi sound connection started working through the S/PDIF profile. The reason for restarting my pc was a minor Linux update that was offered, downloaded and installed today. Maybe there's no connection between this update and the working sound, but somehow the problem was solved (maybe changing the profile to S/PDIF and restarting would have done the job as well).

I can't really explain it, but I shall add [SOLVED] to the topic line.

Sometimes you have to restart for the new profile to take effect. I'm glad I was able to help though. :D

And sometimes one makes silly mistakes: everything worked just finoe -- but with 3,5 mm audio jack connected to the amplifier, not the hdmi cable. So back to where I started: the system settings after upgrading ther kernel tot the latest Edge version. The Sound Settings now include a hdmi/dp profile thsat wasn't there in kernel 5.15. I hope someone can see why there' s no sound on my TV via the hdmi/dp cable.

As an experiment I would suggest temporarily turning off PulseAudio, which has been bothering quite a few people here on the forum. You could use this tutorial, which also allows for recovery on failure: https://trendoceans.com/enable-pipewire ... in-ubuntu/
My sound also only works with PipeWire.

I'm afraid that's too complicated for me, as a newbie user of Linux.

There is nothing complicated - you open Terminal, copy and execute the commands in the purple rectangles /without $ in front/ one by one until "Replace/Disable PipeWire with PulseAudio". Then you restart the computer and check the sound. If it doesn't work and you want to go back, you execute the commands after "Replace/Disable PipeWire with PulseAudio". And you reboot again.

Please supply the complete system info. When dealing with HDMI connections that means the graphics driver is installed but we know nothing about the graphics on your system.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

The partial data you posted indicates you are running Xfce so I'm confused as to why Cinnamon is being discussed.

Also, does the sound work if you don't use the amplifier and just have the TV connected to the computer?

Because I'm not very good with the eyes and I didn't see. I assumed the OP was using Cinnamon, and I don't know why he didn't refute me.

Thanks for looking into my sound problem.

The sound does not play via the TV directly (without the amplifier), and I did have Xfce when I first opened tis topic, but switched to Cinnamon for testing purposes. Now I'm running Cinnamon with the 6.5 Edge kernel (which doesn' t make any difference for the sound problem). Please find my complete system settings below.

Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.
