I am new to linux and installed mint cinnamon within the last month or two. I got a new display, a 42" OLED TV, but I can't set the resolution refresh rate I want (3840x2160 at 100). I saw another person having issues and posted a link to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV1X2C_V-xE I went through the steps and got the desired resolution and refresh rate, but after restarting the computer, I get this message in the terminal

Code: Select all

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
and the settings are unchanged. Also seems noteworthy to mention that the monitor is connected via HDMI to a display port in my graphics card.

Any help is appreciated!

Welcome to the forum, Andrews_brother.

Usually that happens because you are trying to set a resolution the TV does not support. Please provide the output of xrandr and enclose the results in code tags as described in this tutorial Displaying terminal output in a post which has a graphic on using code tags.

It's also possible you made need to upgrade amdgpu linux-firmware.

For what reason are you using an OEM kernel instead of the HWE kernel available in Update Manager? For newer hardware like yours, we recommend installing with the Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon (Edge) Edition ISO which has the 6.5 HWE kernel. (I post that more for future reference for those reading this. You do not need to re-install to get a different kernel.)

As an FYI, if this is the correct link, the latest BIOS/UEFI is 5404.

I installed the most recent amdgpu firmware, but that didn't seem to help.

As to why this kernel, to be honest, I have no clue. I had some issues with the original install and, after working through your Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) post, I was able to get things running.

In response to update manager, it looks like all of my kernels have the OEM label or no label at all. I have tried installing HWE kernels through the

Code: Select all

apt install linux-generic-hwe-20.04
command, but after rebooting and checking the kernel, it still says oem.

Should I also try installing the latest BIOS?

Well, it turns out the problem was my cable all along. I switched to a HDMI 2.1 cable and everything works!

That is the command for an HWE kernel for Linux Mint 20 versions. You are running Linux Mint 21.3 so that will not work.

The HWE kernel is available in Update Manager.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Glad you were able to figure it out. :)

It looks like I have 6.5.0-26 installed, but I'm guessing that's not what you were referencing.

That is the top 6.5, and none of them say HWE.

6.5.0-26 is an HWE kernel.

Linux Mint boots to the highest number installed kernel. In this case, the OEM numbers are higher than the HWE number. That means the default is to boot into the OEM kernel.

You can select in the grub menu the Advanced Options and then in that screen select the 6.5.0-26 HWE kernel you have installed (use the one which does not have recovery mode after it) to run with the HWE kernel. If you do not normally see the grub menu, repeatedly tapping the Escape key while booting will bring it up if you get the timing right. (Sometimes the timing can be an issue.)

You have your issue resolved, but I wanted to explain what you are seeing. If you want to switch to using the HWE kernel, you would boot with the HWE kernel and then use Update Manager to remove the installed OEM kernels so only the HWE remains and you will automatically boot to it. However, we recommend you have at least one back-up kernel in place so you would want more than one HWE kernel installed (you would want one active and one installed).
