Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
Hi, everyone.
What is the reason that video content not playing in Chromium and Chrome but does play in Firefox? I did upgrade to Mint 21.3 but yesterday while I was busy looking at a training video in Chromium my PC started to slow down I closed Chromium and when I opened it again video content played without any pictures.
Blessings

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
Hello, I am a French IT technician (Google translation)
Same problem here; This is a new problem.
Last Friday, a customer (on Linux Mint 21.3) called me to explain his problem with videos on Chrome (the video screen remains white, but the sound works and the thumbnails are displayed when you place the mouse on the progress bar ; all is fine on Firefox). This client is not currently in my region, I took remote control, and I deactivated uBlock Origin, I reverted to the default DNS, I cleaned the cache and cookies, I installed chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra, but nothing did it. I uninstalled Chrome (and deleted its hidden directory) and reinstalled it but the problem was still there. I was left without a solution.
Today Tuesday, I just installed Linux Mint on another customer's laptop, and I noticed the same problem... It's an ACER Aspire 5736Z with a new SSD. Here is the information about this computer:

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
Something new and notable, I think...
I finished the installation of my client's ACER Aspire 5736Z computer, despite the Chrome problem, and unfortunately, the computer suddenly started shutting down without warning whenever I put too much strain on it, for example with videos (on Firefox, of course), so the computer had a bigger problem than Chrome's videos problem ; I'm not sure if it's Linux Mint or the computer itself the problem.
After discussion with my client, we agreed to purchase a new used computer, and I therefore transferred the SSD from the "old" ACER Aspire 5736Z directly to this "new" ASUS X540S without modifying anything on the SSD.
And there, “miracle”, Google Chrome plays videos very well!
Maybe this will make it easier to understand the origin of Chrome's problem with videos on certain computers...
Here is the information about the ASUS X540S:

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
I have the same problem, I'm running 20.3
I'd like to add some additional data: when you try to reproduce a video, audio works ok, however the screen become almost white.
The problem appear after last upgrade of chromium based browsers that is shown in the store to be "for linux-mint".
I can say that because the problem arise (for me) first in Brave (after upgrade) and some days later the same in chromium after last upgrade.
I've installed Opera from Opera page ( not from the store) and it works ok.
My knowledge are very limited in order to install old versions but I think that others can try.
I know that this isn't a good solution, I just want to add information.

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
You can use Firefox as it comes with Mint 21.3 and doesn't give the problem that Chrome and Chromium do. The other solution is to install 21.2 and doesn't upgrade to 21.3 until 1 of the more experienced guys here gives us feedback on why this problem exists.Jules wrote: ⤴Wed Mar 27, 2024 12:03 pm I have the same problem, I'm running 20.3

All 3 posters:
If the problem is due to a Chromium or Chrome update I suggest you Timeshift back to a snapshot from before the update. If it works, then please report the update that breaks the video play (start update Manager - select View - History of Updates).
TitanTopRunner:
You should probably start your own topic, but with 4 GB of Ram I would not expect to necessarily be able to run videos successfully in Chromium or Chrome. You are using Xfce, which is good, so you might have a chance to successfully run videos in Chromium or Chrome. Watch your RAM in System Monitor to see if you are using it up.
Also, you are running kinda hot on that machine (Sensors).

Your machine is a bit old, but should run LM pretty easily and should play videos fairly well. Try my Timeshift idea.

How do you do that?when you try to reproduce a video

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
Hi Mikeflan.
Everything work well, it's just Chrome and Chormium that is the issue. I believe it happened after I upgrade to 21.3 because before that there was no problem since I got this motherboard after my previous one broke due to all these power dips in South Africa. I'm going to reinstall 21.2 and then will keep at it.
Blessings

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
My wife runs Mint 21.1 on an old Dell Optiplex 380, and recently had the same issue after a Chrome update - sound but no video. Firefox worked fine. (She isn't techie, but she has a tame IT support department. )
I fixed it by turning off Chrome's hardware acceleration (three dots > Settings > System) which had previously been set on with no trouble. Seems like the recent update had more stringent hardware requirements - or something. It's a workaround, but doesn't impact what she wants the PC for.
Hope that may help someone. I can post system details if they're going to be useful?

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
Hi, everyone.
It looks like Chrome is working fine now with video content, although Chromium still play videos with no images.
So I'm going to uninstall Chromium and keep Chrome as it works without me doing anything to my PC.
Blessings

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
I was also experiencing this with any Chrome based browser [for me: Googles Chrome, Chromium and Opera]
I managed to pooch my AMD drivers in the process of trying to work out why (purged and reinstalled xserver-xorg to resolve that issue).
I want to note, with gratitude, English Bob. His solution has resolved videos on all Chromium browsers to date:
Whilst not a total resolution it has worked for me.

Re: Video content not playing in chromium and chrome.
Just dropping a note to say that - for us at least - this issue seems to be fixed with the most recent Chrome update to version 123.0.6312.122. I was able to flip the hardware acceleration back on without breaking any videos, at least; and if the problem returns I now know how to work around it. Seems like they squashed a bug.
@OnlyJunk you're welcome, glad it helped!
