Draftsight 2D CAD

Dassault Systems have announced that they are withdrawing support for the free version and that it will cease to function at the end of the year. The new version is on a subscription model and will be Windows only :x Does anyone know of a good alternative? Qcad works with most of my drawings but mes...

Re: One click or two?

IIRC Apple may have tried to Patent the WIMP despite the fact that it predates bits of fruit. Not sure about that. Xerox first demonstrated the WIMP in the mid 1970s and I think there was some deal involving Apple stock allowing them access to the technology. Many Apple engineers were ex Xerox. Rus...

Re: One click or two?

Didn't Microsoft patent double click some years back? I won't use doulbe click as I don't want to pay MS royalties

Re: Another assault against our privacy being proposed

They are welcome to look at all my data. “Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say. It’s a deeply anti social principle because rights are not just individual,...

Re: Kids can't use computers

I think that one problem here is that there is no clear nominative distinction between the educational requirements for suers (those who just want to use Word, Excel, etc., for business or liesure), maintainers (who need to keep the computers running==) and designers. When I was at grammar school in...

Re: Help with fstab entries please

Thanks guys,

I removed the space from the directory name and it works fine now. It seems rather strange that "mount" works with the space and escape character but "fstab" doesn't.
I will also change to using the UUID as it is the preferred way.

[Solved] Help with fstab entries please

Hi I would like to put my Virtualbox virtual machines in a separate partition on my laptop. I have created a partition sda9 for them and have tried adding the following at the end of the fstab file: # mount VirtualBox\ VMs at boot /dev/sda9 /home/russell/VirtualBox\ VMs ext4 defaults 0 0 However all...

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

Just to wrap this up: I sent the HP Laptop 17-ak0xx back to the supplier and bought a HP-Laptop-17-bs0xx instead with Intel processor and graphics. Installation of Mint Cinnamon 18.3 as dual boot with W10 went smoothly in one afternoon. The only problem that arose was the wifi adaptor not being reco...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

First had a play with Red Hat in, I think, 1999. I borrowed an installation disk from the guy running our office server and did a dual boot install. Learned a bit but couldn't get used to the StarOffice suite so gave up. Then in 2009 I was introduced to PCLinuxOS. That was a revelation - easy to use...

That's a bit pricey for me on a pension and I need a 17" screen for CAD software. I've ordered one of these:

Re: Windows 10---ARGH!

What's wrong with Windows? I have had XP on my workshop computer for years to control a cnc milling machine - no internet connection, no updates, no problems :D

On the other hand W10 on a laptop - ugh but Fusion 360 won't run on XP

Intel HD 620

Hi, I'm contemplating buying a new laptop with an i5-7200U with HD 620 graphics. I've seen reports of problems with the HD 620 but they are all over a year old. My question is, have the problems now been fixed with the more recent kernels? I intend to install Cinnamon 18.3 dual boot with W10 and hav...

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

I'm considering one of these: HP PC portable- HP17bs086nf - 17.3 Intel i5-7200U HD620 graphics. Can anyone let me know if that is likely to work well? I see there have been problems with the HD 620 but it seems to have been fixed in recent kernels?

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

Couldn't live with the poor video performance compared with my old Toshiba. Other problems surfaced - including black screen after suspend requiring battery removal, low brightness and brightness control not working, etc. I have now returned the laptop to the supplier and will look for another model...

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

your GPU is currently not supported by the default open source driver and new AMDGPU-PRO driver from AMD neither supports mobile GPUs. That's a shame, video performance is very jerky. I guess I will live with it and hope for an updated driver before too long, I can always use Windows if necessary f...

Re: No Wifi on Hp Bw088ax with mint 18.3 clean install

Worked for me as well on my new HP Laptop 17-ak0xx.

Thanks Jeremy. Could you please explain what those commands did. I'm still trying to learn!
