O.K. New install and data restored from backup, being careful to avoid hidden files. All working fine now.
Thanks

Re: Upgrade from Cinnamon 21.2 to 21.3 failed
I don't think I was asked that question.
It might take some time but I think it will be best to do a clean install as I have a full backup of my home directory. That will avoid any problems being carried over.
Thanks
Russell

Re: Upgrade from Cinnamon 21.2 to 21.3 failed
Before I go to Timeshift I have found another possible clue:
Launching Firefox from a terminal I get the message
Do you think that could be significant?

Re: Upgrade from Cinnamon 21.2 to 21.3 failed
Thanks for your reply. Deleting /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-systray.desktop gets rid of that error message but there is still no panel and all applications started from desktop shortcuts are launched at a fixed size. Files (Nemo?) works O.K. except that it can,t be resized. For most others the menu at ...

{SOLVED} Upgrade from Cinnamon 21.2 to 21.3 failed
Hello I have just run the upgrade from Cinnamon 21.2 to 21.3 and have a problem: When the system boots the Grub menu appears and works followed by the login screen. If I login my old background image comes up but then the screen goes black and my desktop icons appear but there is no panel at the bot...

Something is broken in my printer setup on my desktop PC. It is an HP Envy 7640 series connected by ethernet to my router. My laptop also connected to the router by ethernet prints OK. both computers are running Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon fully updated. When I try to print the print status shows the j...

Re: Can't fix broken packages
The 6.1.0 kernel suggested by Sleeper12 failed when I tried to update after an update arrived so it's back to square 1. I have restored from a Timeshift from 18th April with 5.15.0-70-generic kernel, before I started to try to get my GPU to work with Folding At Home to ensure that everything is clea...

Re: Can't fix broken packages
Thanks again, I have now tried a number of kernels in the 5.19 series and they all give the same error message when I select install updates in the Update Manager. I have followed Sleeper12's suggestion and now have kernel 6.1.0-1009-oem installed. I can't yet tell if Update Manager is working as it...

Re: Can't fix broken packages
Thanks everyone I restored from Timeshift which downgraded the kernel to 5.15.0-58-generic. Mint update now works. I had installed kernel 5.19.0-41 to fix a display problem that occurred after trying to install amd radeon video drivers so tried installing that kernel again and that stopped Mint Upda...

Re: Can't fix broken packages
I would try sudo dpkg --configure -a . Notice that's two hyphens for --configure, one hyphen for -a. Might not work, but can't hurt anything. If you get error messages, copy them and paste into your next reply. Alternatively, if the suggested command doesn't solve the problem, restore with Timeshif...

Can't fix broken packages
Trying to update with the manager I get the "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first." message. Looked at Synaptic, it tells me that there are no broken packages. Tried the command line: sudo apt-get update --fix-missing sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt autoremove synaptic still...

Re: AMD Radion RX6500XT stopped working
GPU slot for FAH is still showing as disabled I guess I should start a new topic to ask how to get the AMD driver installed without FUBARing the system so I'll mark this as solved.

Re: AMD Radion RX6500XT stopped working
Have you tried a different cable or different monitor to see if the results are the same? With a 12th-gen Intel CPU, I would recommend using a newer kernel. Because you need the proprietary AMD driver, just move up to using the 5.19 kernel which is available in Update Manager. Instructions for upgr...

AMD Radion RX6500XT stopped working [SOLVED]
Hi My new graphics card has reverted to only giving 640 x 480 resolution after I installed the AMD driver in order to get Folding at Home to use the GPU. I had some help from the folding forum here: https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?p=360160#p360160 . It had been working fine for a few days aft...

[SOLVED]FAHClient not starting at boot
I'm trying to set up my replacement desktop machine. Installed Mint Cinnamon to dual boot with W7. I've installed the latest FAHClient downloaded from foldingathome.org. I tried installing the FAHControl but it fails to install with an unsatisfied dependency related to Python, but no details in the ...

Re: Is it safe to directly install LM and uninstall all my current OS?
Personally I would go for the dual boot option provided you have sufficient space on the hard drive. I rarely boot into Windows now but it is useful occasionally for some tasks such as updating my GPS, and for my 3D modelling software (Fusion 360).

Re: ExpressVPN losing network after disconnecting.
I've had the same problem since upgrading to Mint 20.2. ExpressVPN support tell me they have a problem with the latest version of Ubuntu and suggested typing in a terminal: nmcli networking off nmcli networking on That is inconvenient but it works to restore the WiFi without a reboot. It is easy eno...
