O.K. New install and data restored from backup, being careful to avoid hidden files. All working fine now.

I don't think I was asked that question.
It might take some time but I think it will be best to do a clean install as I have a full backup of my home directory. That will avoid any problems being carried over.

Personally I would go for the dual boot option provided you have sufficient space on the hard drive. I rarely boot into Windows now but it is useful occasionally for some tasks such as updating my GPS, and for my 3D modelling software (Fusion 360).
