Re: Mint Mate vs XFCE on HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower

I normally dual boot windows 10 and linux mint in a Thinkpad laptop, no problems at all. I also have an HP SFF (core i5, 8GB RAM9), it runs Mint Mate flawlessly, but surely Cinnamon would run either very well.

Re: Removing tons of fonts !

Me too, I have to spend half an hour for each new installation to remove all the unnecessary fonts. I wonder why there are so many regional fonts (malayam, bengali, thai, etc.) installed by default. Is linux mint so popular in South Asia? Just curious...

Re: Questions for Mint users who have investigated Manjaro

I have just installed Manjaro in a new laptop. I had to do because no Debian/Ubuntu derivatives I've tried was capable of recognizing the touchpad. Only Manjaro. This is a nice distro (Xfce) and clearly improved from the early days, now is reasonably stable. And easy to manage as ever. :)

Re: Questions for Mint users who have investigated Manjaro

I'v tried Manjaro years ago, as pointed before, it was pretty (Xfce) and easy to manage but unstable. My installation at some point crashed, and I realized that Manjaro isn't a distro suitable for everyday productive work. Stability is first, I haven't time to fix things when I need to do the job.

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 19

Upgraded 18.3 to 19 today, no issues, all went fine. The only "issue" maybe is the slow boot, much slower than before. Beautiful release, thanks Clem! If you let update manager apply the 4.15.0-24 kernel after install, try one of the earlier ones listed in update manager to avoid the slow boot issu...

Re: XFCE system sounds... or lack thereof

Lack of sounds is an old problem of XFCE. I tried for years to solve it without luck, and I much like system sounds. The only XFCE distro with working system sounds by default is MX Linux. I don't understand why XFCE developers don't care about system sounds, they are useful and beautiful.

Re: Lost (partially) administrative privileges [apparently solved]

Thanks Tovian! Probably you are right, there is a display server problem here (because "x" seems to be the culprit). I will do more research on this matter. I found the "startx" solution on a forum, and apparently worked. Then, with privileges regained (temporally?) I added my user profile to some g...

Lost (partially) administrative privileges [apparently solved]

Hi, I don't remeber how, but I partially lost my privileges as administrator. Yes, I can enter the terminal with sudo, and perform some taks like update the system and install whatever, but I cannot run any program as administrator, for example. I cannot figure out what is happening here. When I try...

Re: After todays update-->initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart

sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-guest* This didn't work for me :( I also tried TimeShift from the root command line and it won't run due to permission stuff? Had to run sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-guest* twice and now I'm back I've had a few updates today ... I had the same problem today, the sol...

Re: 32 Bit System

32 bit OSes and software are still useful. I use several old pcs and laptops for work and entetairnment, some of them really NEED 32 bit either because the processor cannot support 64 bit or because performance is better with 32 bit (for example, I have an old Athlon 64x2 2GB ram desktop pc, with de...

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

Today is the dreaded change to FF 57. My first impressions: ...shocking. The UI is ugly, flat and window-ish. The speed improvement is noticeable, thought. Various extensions doesn't work anymore. I miss particularly downthemall! and hide caption titlebar plus. The last was very useful to reduce th...

This may work for you: https://gist.github.com/nanpuyue/ec7d34e174267db3927124edcd2a8844 It requires installing a shell script in your home directory and installing a new extension in your web browser. So, what I did: 1) Install devilspy sudo apt-get install devilspie 2) made folder mkdir ~/.devilspie 3) made file firefox.ds in ~/.devilspie and placed in it: ; firefox rule to undecorate all existing and new windows (if (is (window_class) "Firefox") (undecorate)) 4) Close my Firefox run in termina...

Re: browser: alternatives to Firefox 57

Chromium is also good (if not for the lack of video codecs support). I'm actually testing Vivaldi on a daily basis, to find if it could be "the" replacement for FF. In general, this browser is OK (amazing customization options and unique features), I've found only few bugs like the "freezing" of som...

Re: Which do you prefer: Cinnamon or XFCE?

Cinnamon is great but not the best option for older or low end hardware. Moreover, Xfce is more customizable. For example, Xfce has a simple option in window management, to hide window decorations when the window is maximized: very useful to eliminate the title bar in a browser. And Xfce main bar is...
