[SOLVED] how to make a sandbox?

In the Linux Games Database is the game Unreal World, which is not in any repository that I know of, but is available as a .deb file. (It's also available as a binary in a tarball but that has the same basic problem.) My OS is LM 19 with Mate 64-bit. When I ran gdebi to install it, it messed with my...

Re: difficulty adding an additional repository

Okay, thanks for the info.

In more general terms, is there some hub site or resource for exploring other repositories? A web page for specific software may tell you about what repository it uses, but is there a place that keeps track of current repos, not necessarily just for Linux Mint?

[SOLVED] difficulty adding an additional repository

My OS is LM 19 with MATE 64-bit. Following the instructions as best I could from this (5 years old) page: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2013/07/enable-getdeb-playdeb-repository-in-linux-mint/ In the Software Sources app, I clicked on Additional Repositories, then I clicked Add a new repository...

Re: I seem to have lost my PATH

Here is what I did and what happened. [EDITED] david@Achernar:~$ echo "PATH=$PATH:`pwd`" >> ~/.bashrc david@Achernar:~$ ls Command 'ls' is available in '/bin/ls' The command could not be located because '/bin' is not included in the PATH environment variable. ls: command not found david@Achernar:~$ ...

[SOLVED] I seem to have lost my PATH

I recently installed LM19 with MATE 64 bit. Everything was working fine. Then, while following instructions in a README file to build some software, I typed in: echo "PATH=PATH:`pwd`" >> ~/.bashrc source ~/.bashrc I'm not sure if either of these commands are the culprits, but now none of my shell co...

[SOLVED] statistical analysis of an image file?

Is there any (preferably free) software which inputs an image file and a list of color ranges, and generates a text file of how many pixels fall into each range? My purpose is to work with a "fractal zoom" animation frame generator such as POVray and its mandel pattern. It can be difficult to predic...

[SOLVED] python3-pip: command not found! apt: latest version!

I recently installed LM19 with MATE on my 64 bit machine. Using the software manager gui, I installed python3-pip, or at least that's what it told me. Here is a transcript from my mate-terminal: david@Achernar:~$ python3-pip -V python3-pip: command not found david@Achernar:~$ sudo apt install python...

Re: Mouse batteries died, now inaccessible. ALSO Login via Lynx?

If the Receiver is used for both keyboard and mouse, then it could be the Mouse has lost pairing with the Receiver. If that's the situation...... You initially posted you're running Mint 8.1 Mate, I'm assuming that's a typo and you're running Mint 18.1 Mate. Yes 18.1 sorry. There is a utility for L...

Re: Using the keypad to replace the mouse?

Okay, thank you, 5 is usually left click, but sometimes it is right click I don't know how I am toggling it, and once it becomes right click, I cannot return it to left click. 0 appears to be right click. Please, where is this documented? All the Mate keyboard commands lists I have found so far don'...

Re: Mouse batteries died, now inaccessible. ALSO Login via Lynx?

Have you tried moving the dongle to a different USB port? I switched ports. No improvement. It seems unlikely that the dongle is the problem, since my keyboard is also wireless, and it works fine. Although this is ostensibly a hardware issue, the remedy may well lie with software. It seems likely t...

Using the keypad to replace the mouse?

My OS is LM 18.1 64 bit with Mate. My mouse became unrecognized by the computer, which I ask about in the hardware forum. Looking for a workaround, first I pulled up the Keyboard Preferences window, and activated the Mouse Keys tab. There is a check box there to enable the keypad to move the pointer...

Maybe the mouse Is broken despite the LED, or the USB stick is? Stuff breaks. How could I tell? Do they sell just the stick?

Re: Mouse batteries died, now inaccessible. ALSO Login via Lynx?

I can tell I put the batteries in correctly because the green LED on the mouse lights up when I switch it on. So yes, I also switched it on. ☺ Both positive ends point towards the battery door. These are perfectly valid questions. I've done worse.

Re: Mouse batteries died, now inaccessible. ALSO Login via Lynx?

I discovered the ALT F1 combo to get the Mate menu. I can open the window "Keyboard Preferences" and I believe I can select the checkbox "Pointer can be controlled using the keypad" but am unable to check that box. I can tell I am selecting different items within that tab because on every fifth Tab ...
