Hi pbear, asinoro's suggestion involves editing the grub 2 bootloader. Since I can't get linuxmint to run on the usb stick I do not know how to do that. If I edit /etc/default/grub on the usb stick using my linux computer how can I run update grub on the usb stick without affecting my linux box?

Rayser, I tried Boot Repair as you suggested but it will not work as my computer is in Legacy mode, not EFI mode.

Well administrollaattori, that did not work either. The install seemed to complete normally but a reboot gives the same results as before and selcting an EFI boot from the bios boot menu just launches Windows as before.
