Re: I have held broken packages,,, what?

Really does no one know what a "held broken package" is?

Re: I have held broken packages,,, what?

Will give that a shot. Thanks. Still does not explain the message. How can I list these "held packages." Not just interested in the fix but the cause as well.

Well this was run as root so sudo won't really help here. I'm really looking for an explanation of what the erorr message means. What the heck are "held broken packages"?

I have held broken packages,,, what?

Can someone explain what this error means, specifically the "E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." part: LinuxMint15pc ~ # apt-get install virtualbox Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed...

CLI for mintupdate

Is there any CLI for mintupdate? I want to be able to add a cron job to automatically update anything level 3 and below.

Yeah, that's the first thing I tried. Interestingly enough, when I plug or unpug the headphone alsamixer changes and recognizes what is going on, but nothing is muted and volume levels are up.

Sound only comes through headphones not speakers

I have a Thinkpad W530 and a strange sound problem. Sound works fine through headphone jack, but will not come out of the speakers. I think it used to when I first setup Linux Mint (14) but not sure what could have caused this. Anyone heard of such a thing before?

Re: How to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMi

I'm using Asus N61J laptop with GT325M. I tried installing these drivers and only had one "error" which I didn't think was a major one: The NVIDIA 32-bit compatibility OpenGL libraries are to be installed relative to the top-level prefix (chroot) '/emul/ia32-linux'; however, this directory does not...

Re: How to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMi

Man, I took me a good 40 minutes to figure out it was "mdm". When I googled, all I got was lightdm and/or gdm. Maybe we should make a thread that explicitly states that its 'mdm' in Cinnamon? What about Mate, lighdm probably?! I think mdm is the fork of the old gnome display manager that was create...

Re: Which Linux version should I choose?

Zalittle, just to be clear are you trying to decide which distro to go with or which desktop environment to go with? You said you were not satisfied with Ubuntu? Why is that? What are your needs? Is it just stability and 3rd party installations? I don't think there will be any difference between Min...

Re: How to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers in LinuxMi

I thought part of the appeal (maybe I've been misinformed) of Linux Mint is that you get the proprietary drivers by default, or at least just checking some box to install them. Is there no package for the proprietary drivers? So now what happens if you update the kernel? When you reboot X is gonna c...

Re: Blowing away Fedora but Mint won't boot

After re-installing and putting grub on the MBR things seem to work. Despite my bonehead move the installation process was a breeze. Hats off to the Linux Mint folks.

Re: Blowing away Fedora but Mint won't boot

I am using the live DVD. Actually now that I think about it I may have told Grub to use /sda1. Doh! So MBR is probably formatted and blank which is why nothing boots. I guess I could mount sda2 and chroot into it and re-install Grub, but I'll just give the installation another go so I can grab some ...

Re: Blowing away Fedora but Mint won't boot

Should also mention I see the following error after some time goes by, even with just the liveCD. Figure it's innocuous since I don't even have a floopy drive. Error mounting /dev/fd0 at /media/mint/disk: Command-line `mount -t "auto" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/fd0" "/media/mint/disk"' ...

Blowing away Fedora but Mint won't boot

I have an existing system that has run Fedora (various verisons) for years. Decided to give Linux Mint a try and it all seemed to go swimmingly until it said installation was complete and I rebooted. After POST, I just see a white dash like it can't find anything to boot. Never see Grub or anything....
