Re: Ubuntu Devs Testing Chromium Browser Transition From Deb To Snap Package - How will this affect Mint?

This is Googlew deciding to move to a snap format, not Ubuntu. It does make me think that they're not so serious about supporting chromium for Linux anymore though.

Re: Modifying mp4 video files...

I'd use avidemux ffor this, I have, but not for this exect reason. I'd also use audacity ... just open the video file with it, it'll extract the audio stream. But I'd try a normalization filter myself too. After you have the audio track, open the video file with avidemux, set the video to Copy mode,...

Re: Vivaldi Does Not Appear in Menu

I used Vivaldi in 17.3 and now in 18.3 and it's always shown up in the menus. I use Xfce on that machine, not Cinnamon, but that shouldn't make any difference. If you installed with a .deb file it's normal for programs to show up in the menus because using dpkg or gdebi to install .debs actually use...

Re: Recommend a Mint version for me.

Screen tearing is a real issue that is hard to escape. I have installed literally 80 or more different distros on my desktop with a 4th generation Haswell i5 CPU and over 90% of the distros that I have tried exhibit screen tearing. I just installed the latest Ubuntu Mate last night and the screen t...

Re: What do the "/" and "/home" mean?

This is one of the first things you encounter in Linux if you're a Windows user. The file system is different, it's logic based not physical, which is more or less why there's no C: drive. And you would want to know the difference. Here's a guide: https://www.linux.com/blog/learn/intro-to-linux/2018...

Re: Acer Aspire 5100 attempted LM 19.1 Live Disc got Fall back mode

Ten years is a common timeframe for a resurrection. 13 is pushing it. You might have to use an old kernel or do the install at midnight when there is a full moon. Linux Mint worked on that combination in the past: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=23746 Perhaps it worked like that when t...

Re: All my USB ports shut of randomly and don't turn back on - Plz Help

If it's happening after running for a while it may be over heating, you may want to consider taking it to a shop and having it cleaned.

You should post more complete system info, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots plz):

Re: Do you use distros till its EOL ?

I've always intended to run them until EOL but the only time I've ever actually done it ... well, I guess I had a day or two ... was with Mint 17.3 on my netbook. Great release, that was.

Hello sgtor,

I just took a look at cryfs. It's currently in beta at this time....
Don't know about the rest of your question but there is just no way in hell I'd use a beta release for somwthing like this. Or anything remotely important. Beta = buggy.

Re: software rendering mode

Well, to be honest this reply is underwhelming. I have been running Mint for years with cinnamon on my older machine, which which I am typing on now, and it is absolutely fine. It's a dual 2.6 Ghz. It is because I have been using this successfully, and that i want to transfer files and software I k...

Re: How is linux kernel 5 on linux mint?

I am currently running the 5.0.0-16 kernel, using mostly older hardware (as listed in my signature). The only (2) newer pieces are an SSD and a USB WiFi adapter. So far, I have noticed a huge improvement in WiFi link quality; I previously rarely got above 75%, now I'm consistently in the 90% range....

Was that a personal choice or is that machine a...

Re: Distrowatch stats for LM?

The "best" distro does depend on what computer you're using.... Yes, and your skill level. There are only 2 distros I'd recommend to beginners, Mint and Ubuntu. They're designed with newbies in mind and have a decent user base so support is better. Some distros are excellent but really aren't for n...

Agreed, if it's old slow hardware Cinnamon is never going to run very well.

ANd yes, you can stop processes, but Linux is so modular compared to Windows it's a lot harder to figure out which ones to stop.

Re: should I change swappiness?

I've always done this for years, the default setting is more appropriate for servers than desktop users. But 60 isn't always the best value, on my netbook with 1Gb RAM it's best at 40. A setting of 10 is appropriate for a more 'normal' 4GB or more settup. This isn't magic, and it's not going to make...
