Re: NVIDIA.run recognizes Nouveau no matter what

.... My Linux Mint came with 390.48 NVIDIA which is fine, but it is all the way up to 390.8 and there have been several updates since then, and I would like the best gfx support possible. ... It's a common Linux newbie mistake to always want the newest drivers. If there's one thing new users need t...

Re: NVIDIA.run recognizes Nouveau no matter what

I did actually have need for it, thanks. :) Please stick to helping people in the support section instead of telling me what I did wrong. The point is that I should be able to get it working in the first place, and I have no need for nouveau. There aren't that many truly knowledgeable people here a...

Re: Is GTKHash compatible with KDE?

SOmetimes large, complex GTK programs can have problems in KDE though it's a lot more common for the reverse to happen. Ie. I've never been able to run Okular properly in a non KDE DE. That'd be very frustrating for me if I didn;t have a KDE box because that and Chrome are the only Linux apps I know...

Sounds like overheating to me, esp. if it happens after bitcoin mining. Post the text results of inxi -Fxz from the terminal.

Re: Which Intel Graphic driver Linux Mint 19 is using?

There aren't actually a lot of Linux drivers for Intel video cards. If you install Mint pre 19 you get the intel driver, for 19 you get the modesetting driver. That may be the issue but as others have said it's hard to say without lots more info. The opposite could have happened re mint v. other dis...

I've been searching in vain for real media producers who use Linux for years. YouTube doesn't count for me though.

Re: How to upgrade Cinnamon 3.67 to 3.8

It's quite true that doing a major point release update (like 18.3 to 19) via a backup and clean reinstall is a much better idea than a web upgrade. However, the reason why is rarely mentioned. It's because the web update process is just not reliable enough for a major update, in both Mint and its U...

Re: Updated Kernel - video judder/stutter

I updated from Mint 18.1, to 18.3, to 19 with the 4.15.0-33-generic kernel. Upgrading from one Mint series (18.x) to another (19.x) is a bad idea. This might even account for (part of) the performance hit you're experiencing. Start your problem solving by doing a clean installation of Mint 19. That...

Re: VLC - SWF

I think the issue is that .swf is an Adobe Flash format. Adobe's Linux support isn't great ... Adobe Reader hasn't been supported since Mint 17 ... and the only Linux program I know of with proper OOTB Flash support is Chrome. That's very theoretical, I'd expect Ubuntu to last longer than just about any distro except maybe RHEL.

Re: is MATE lighter than Cinnamon?

Yes, the performance will depend largely on your graphics card.

But the answer to your question is that Cinnamon is much heavier than Mate. Cinnamon needs over 1G RAM just by itself, which IMO is insane for a Linux DE.

It's not 100% unusual for power management to be worse in Linux but hard to say without meaningful system details. PLease copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots please):
