Re: Launcher: Text instead of icon

Haven't used Mate recently but have you tried just right clicking a launcher and seeing what comes up?

This output is all text, and it would be easier to read if you could post it as text.
WHich is why I always specify "no screenshotts please". If it's actual text i might opy/paste and search something from the output. Screenshots I largely ignore.

Re: "Best" file manager

Haven't tried xfe. The most powerful, by a mile, of theones I've used is Dolphin. But I wouldn't bother installing it in a non KDE system

I've found an excellent light file manager is pcmanfm, it's very smartly designed and installs no dependencies.

Re: plasma

Agree with catwaezel, KDE PLasma makes every other Linux DE I've used look amateurish. And I think Cinnamon is a triumph of style over substance which needs an insane amount of RAM for a Linux DE.

Re: Scala microtuning software on Mint 19

I looked at their dl page and was sursprised to see this reight before the actual Linux link:

"Scala 2.42v for 32-bit Linux on ARMv7 (armhf)"

That's ARM architecture, which is not supported by Mint.

Re: firmware-update-bundles are ruining my mint18/17 experience

If you're running 18.3 you should not be seeing updates that have the word 'trusty'. ANd of course your msgs to Canonical devs aren't being answered, Linux devs aren't interested in holding the hands of inexperienced users one bit. You do need to post inxi output as suggested. If it's old hardware I...

Re: Unable to use ndisgtk with Linuxmint 19 Cinnamon

That driver hasn't been updated since 2011. Recent Linux distros have been dropping old hardware support like mnad lately. This is the Linux kernel project doing this, not Mint, but it affects Mint or any other distro using kernels that new. I'm not surprised here. It's a good thing that you didn't ...

Re: screen blacks out for about 5 seconds on video playback

Does it matter what type of video? Eg. HD or SD, xvid or HEVC? Have you tried enabling frame drop in the media players? The memory stats etc don't change the fact that an AMD 5470 is a legacy card. There's only one driver for it and AMD legacy support is spotty at best. I wouldn't install 19 ... rec...

Re: Video problems with ATI Mobility HD 3470 Chipset - All Ubuntu-Based Distros, U16.04 and Up

You're continually missng the point, the issues are at kernel level, Cinnamon (or Mint) has NOTHING to do with it, and using that on 10 year old no lobger supported video cards is nuts. :D Missing the point. No. I have said above that I found the problem to be common to a wide variety of non-Debian...

Re: Mint 19 Cinnamon is there any free pdf editor?

Master PDF Editor is the one I see recommended most often. It may actually be about the only one I've really seen recommended as far as I remember.

It may depend on the pdf, if it was scanned and is all a graphic you'd need OCR software I think.

AFAIK Ivy Bridge Intel video should work fine with Mint 19 and the modesetting driver. There's no other driver, INtel doesn't make closed binariy ones for Linux.

An article in Ars about EOL tor win7 prompted me to wonder if its an opportunity to push linux. Problem is, who will do the pushing.? You and me.? Desktop Linux is very fragmented = very weak muscles to do any effective pushing. In comparison, Google Inc pushed Android strongly in the mobile OS mar...

Re: About new kernels not supporting old hardware

Lately it's more than occasional, support for old hardware is being cut at kernel level like mad lately. It certainly affects Mint 19. How old a computer should you worry about? Hard to say exactly but I'd guess 8 years.

Re: Dell Inspiron 530s has no sound

Thaty is indeed an old machine and unfortunately Linux has been removing kernel support for old hardware a lot lately. This has nothing to do with Mint, it's the kernel project, and any distro using such a recent kernel is affected. I'd reinstall using 18.3 since this isn't likely going to be the la...

OK, I searched "linux edgemotion" and "ubuntu edgemotion". The only relevant hits I got referred to a software package involving the touchpad, not the mouse, and it hasn't been updated since 2013. So it probably wouldn't work anyway.

I don't think this featyre is supported in Linux.
