Re: Trouble installing Shotcut

You could try dl'ing the appimage from here:

https://shotcut.org/download/

Then just make it executable and make a symlink to the desktop. Open it from there.

Re: Linux kernel 4.15 and Mint 18.3

... I love that the updates are installed and you just keep working.... Actually you shouldn't necessarily keep on working without rebooting. Sometimes it's still using the older version after the update is finished, and that can have security implications. Fortunately it's fairly easy to see if a ...

Re: Difference between actors voices and action scenes volume

On videos I actually like enough to save, I'll take the time to extract the audio (avidemux, audition or audacity), normalize and customize the audio levels to "majorly" reduce the difference between the loud and quiet portions (audition), then stick the audio back in the video file (avidemux again...

Re: Updating my Linux Mint 17.2

It's not so hard to install over an existing Linux partition using the "something else" option. I've done this a n umber of times and the GUI will clearly show which partition has the Linux on it. It'll be the big ext4 format one. I've seen a lot of beginner issues installing Linux that seem to stem...

Re: Why Linux Mint?

Mint is also for people who just want a working system without having to fiddle around after installation. Nonsense. If that were true then these forums wouldn't be full of posts asking for assistance. Agreed, anyone who thinks any Linux distro "just works" knows absolutely nothing about Linux.

Re: I-Red remote control for Cinnamon?

I agree, but I doubt they're going to port that to other DEs. You won't necessarily have to ditch Mint, you'll be able to install Mint (I think Xfce is the recommended version) and then install KDE. But since having multiple DEs is a dumb idea, I strongly suspect that they';; also have instructions ...

Re: Difference between actors voices and action scenes volume

The problem you have is pretty universal. The sound engineers who mix the film and tv series soundtracks mostly have damaged hearing and deliberately mix the tracks this way for effect in cinemas. They are real bozos, and there is little to be done about it, because it has become the industry norm ...

Re: Anybody else constantly getting : "Device or resource busy" when doing routine updates?

Might have nothing to do with it but try making sure you don't have sudo locked down in the terminal or the software manager at the same time i.e. If you are currently installing something then you won't be able to install updates until it is done and vice versa - just having the software manager o...

Re: Desktops

If you prefer Xfce over Mate install the xfce version and stop worrying. There's no huge difference, it's more a matter of taste. Cinnamon is much larger and heavier ... it uses over 1Gb RAM, which is ludicrous for a Linus DE IMO ... and is another league when it comes to hardware requirements. If t...

Probably dependency errors, but I don't use this software and this is the first time I've seen it mentioned here. This page may have some clues if nobody else here does:

Re: 3D in Linux Mint 18.3 (Autodesk Inventor)

Wine is actually a dumb hack that fails on most WIndows apps. The whole concept of it makes no sense. Playonlinux is just a different GUI for WIne. POL is better because it juggles WIne versions for you but it won't fix an app that doesn't work. If you want to see if it has a chance search "linux wi...

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

... To be honest, I am tired of this Elitist Attitude some more advanced users have towards non-tech users and folks who just want a working system without having to tinker around with it. IMHO Mint is well suited to these kinds of folks and with a very friendly users forum that doesn't scream RTFM...

Re: How to use Vestige for LMMS

It couldn't find it because it's not in the standard repos. Which Mint release are you using? In any case I think it's a bit more complex than you think to install. Always read instructions in full, and have a look at this too:

Re: Which flavour goes with this computer

I don't think there's enough of a speed difference between Mate and Xfce to warrant a clean reinstall ... installing multiple DEs is just a bad idea. Xfce used to be noticeably faster but not any more, at least since Xfce 4.12.

Re: Shutter have dependencies problem in Linux Mint 19

... My advice, unless you have seriously bleeding edge hardware and have some kind of hate on for Ubuntu, which does support Ubuntu 18.04, is to install MInt 18.3. Frankly I wish Mint could develop a larger expert user base so they wouldn't encourage using rank beginners to do their beta testing. B...

Re: Driver Manager Broken?

You were asked to provide output of inxi -Fxz. You didn't post it. Most people who have been using Mint for any length of time know you can't get decent support without meaningful system info. And Bay Trail hardware isn't particularly troublesome in Linux. Most users aren't having these problems. On...
