Re: What do you like about KDE?

How do I install Eclipse reader in Linux? If you use any other Mint version except for KDE you should already have it. Mint/Ubuntu don't show the actual program names for many of the preinstalled apps, just their function. Go to application manu, open "Document Viewer", go to help > about. It shoul...

Re: What do you like about KDE?

I don't find Okular any faster really than Eclipse but Eclipse chokes on many pdfs, Okular doesn't. It loads so much faster in my system compared to Cinnamon/Xfce's default reader. Especially in older dual-core systems with 4GB or less ram like in my laptop. I've run both Xfce including Eclipse and...

Re: How do I replace systemd?

... for now, I'm just taking the people's word that systemd is bad. .... What people? Most negative opinions I've seen on the subject weren't exactly well informed. The thing you should know about systemd is that it's the ONLY Linux init system that's being properly maintained nowadays. And replaci...

Re: Side panel yet?

Well, if they did fix it you'll likely want to install 18.x ... I had Mate 17.something installed for a bit and also found this very annoying. However, doing a web upgrade involving a major point release is risky because it's not reliable enough, esp. going from 17.x to 18.x. This is because of big ...

Re: Unbuntu Upgrades

Is unbuntu the heart of linux? No, the Linux kernel is the heart of Linux. Technically Linux is just the kernel. Mint, Ubuntu et al are actaully GNU/Linux. The GNU bit is the open source wrapper around the kernel. Android uses the Linux kernel with their pwn patches and uses a closed source proprie...

Re: What do you like about KDE?

I don't find Okular any faster really than Eclipse but Eclipse chokes on many pdfs, Okular doesn't. Why do I like KDE? The best file manager I've ever used. Just as an example, it will open folders with apps like Audacious or Sound Converter which is great for media use because you don't need to cre...

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 is better than 19 ... Why? I hope main developer see this

Hi everyone with the news that Linux Mint is 2'nd or 3'rd at Distro Watch no wonder the random user do not download any more LM. Main reason are hardware compatibility and software compatibility. Many chose LM for old machines or to run from windows environment. So let's talk my case, I have an ult...

Re: Converting VHS to digital

Upscaling does NOT in itself improve quality one bit. You cannot put in information that isn;t there. Quite pointless.

I think you need to go here for some real experts:

Re: LM19 automatic updates for public access

Oh come on, you say you're a computer technician, you're getting paid for this job, yet your questions are getting ever more basic to a point where I'll just say either pick up a book and learn how to do Linux or cut us in on the pay. This may come over as rude but many of those questions above are...

Re: Converting VHS to digital

Hope this helps ... Real good explanation. I think I'll go for the USB adapter + burning on DVD then. I have normal laptop with a normal DVD player, it should be ok. As for the VHS I don't know how many, but I guess at least one hundred hours of recording in total. It's actually very difficult gett...

Re: panel settings, especially taskbar

If your panel app icons are getting crowded I suggest using multiple virtual desktops/workspaces. Newer users tend to not use them so much, I guess they're just more used to Windows. But if there's one thing Linux has that I coouldn't ive without it's multiple workspaces. They definitely unclutter t...

Re: How to change file date to creation date ?

One way is to pack file(s) and unpack the package. New users are often surprised to discover that Linux/Unix file systems do not support file creation date. They support time of last modification, last access, and last modification of the file's inode and that's it. So packing and unpacking is prob...

Re: Which Video Player works Best on Linux?

mpv but refresh rate problems probably won't be solved by player choice. If it's low spec it's probably also old and I think mplayer is better on old graphics hardware than mpv. Can't hurt to try both of course. I use gnome-mplayer on my netbook, which has one of the worst graphics cards you can ha...

I don't think they've really supported Linux for years, and I don't see any simple way, but have a look at this ...

Re: What's better for Linux

It took me years to learn the main reason WIndows dominates. It's not because it's monolithic. It's because it's not written for end users. It's written for developers. If developers prefer to write their software for WIndows almost everyone will end up using Windows. Linux has a ridiculous set of A...

I have four different eeePC computers which give the message.. eeePCs were crap when new and haven't improved over time. I should know, I have a similar netbook. Trying to run Cinnamon on old hardware which was weak when new is frankly ridiculous. It's designed for modern hardware. If you run inxi ...

It may default to auto arrange, try right clicking the desktop to see if there's a way to turn that off.

Though I suspect with AMD Vega graphics you should have the amdgpu driver ... don 't just try to install the newest AMD driver, this ain't Windows.
