Re: Need help to automate installation and customization

Linux is different enough from Windows that trying to "see if I could more-or-less replicate what I had done on the Windows side" is a bit pointless. Professional Linux IT people don't of this kind of thing much.

Re: Installing VirtualBox

A VM is really better ... Wine is actually quite unreliable and you can't expect anything that's working now to continue doing so for very long. You can definitely just use the software manager ... there are exceptions but the repo version is usually fine and other sources may not work and installin...

All you have to do is dl and install the RC and know how to file a bug report. Remember, in the world of open source suftware we're ALL beta tresters.

No one's going to be able to say much if you don't include even your point release and DE version.

Re: Audacity...need, or already have, LAME in Mint?

Have you installed the codecs package? It's not included in the Mint 18.x isos any more. Go into synaptic package manager, hit the search button. Then search for mint-meta-codecs. If it doesn't show as installed, install it.

I's suggest reinstalling with a separate /home partition if possible (if you aren't already doing so), it...

That's in Debian 9, which you aren't using. Tried the Wine forums?

A quick search of "linux android studio Install Google APIs Intel x86 Atom System Image" gives this:

Search engines are a lot quicker than open source support forums.

Re: How to run Excel with VBA Macros

I can;t find any way to do this in any native Linux apps. Looks to me like you need Wine (which is quite unreliable) or Windows in a VM (much more reliable).

Mint Cinnamon 18.3
That problem shows up here fairly often - and it's usually, if not almost always, Cinnamon/nemo.
Using the simple two-pane "xfe" file browser apparently solved it for at least one person, or you could copy with "cp" in a terminal.
That;s not cool.

Re: Something to manage songs for ipod on Linux

you're not going to find anything like itunes, and that doesn't work in Linux. Apple Linux support is poor and changeable. You may want to read this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPod Though not all apps listed are necessarily going to work, from what I've read I'd try amarok fi...

Re: Cinnamon Desktop on older laptop

Cinnamon is meant for more powerful graphics cards ... I'd never install it again unless it was on a machine with at least 1G dedicated video RAM and probably not then either. It also takes over 1G RAM just by itself, which IMO is just ludicrous in Linux. So no, I wouldn't touch it on an old 2G RAM ...

Google itself has a well sorted offer of addons: one of them is Cookie AutoDelete...
I want more than cookies deleted on exit, esp. the cache. I just use click & clean to do that on exit and use ctl-shift-delete to delete data on demand.

The only real hard and fast rule I kinow of is to check the BIOS date which can be done with inxi -Fxz in the terminal. If the firmware update is dated earlier than the BIOS date, don't do it. I think you can revert microcode updates, try a site specific search of this forum (the built in search sti...

I'm not sure a lighter distro would make much difference with 2G RAM. Try the Mint Xfce edition.

For old hardware the gpu may be more of an issue, and using a light distro probably wouldn't make any difference there. Post the text output from the terminal of inxi -Fxz.

I don't think "ath10k atheros" is enough to go on. You should always post detailed system info for support, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Code: Select all

You haven't posted enough system info, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
And where do you get those drivers from?
