Re: Installing older software, longevity

... Coming from a Windows environment ... users are accustomed to the latest version for fear of unknowns lurking in older software versions. So my question (to get to the point and stop waffling) are Linux users in general more accepting of older (10 + years) software given the OS architecture, pe...

Re: EA_NOT_FOUND error when running asus-fan-control

I looked at that link in the OP. Your machine isn't on the list of hardware on which it's been tested and shown to work. It also says: Compatibility notes: Devices with AMD processors do not work with AFC. Devices with the 7th gen Intel processors work well. Other devices may vary. Intel 7th gen is ...

Re: How do I know if I'm ready to permanently switch to Linux Mint?

Not 100% sure how to answer, I guess if you know you don't actually need any Windows software. Trouble is that can change in the future. I suppose I knew I was ready to ditch Windows when I realized I had a Windows partition that hadn't been booted for a couple of years.

Yeah, you have to be reasonably intelligent to see just how dumb you really are.

Re: What's the appeal that makes some people want to change their package manager?

I installed zypper on my system for testing. Except for trying it out there is no reason at all for it, especially because without tools like YaST it's horrible to manage. I also think that some openSUSE packages (where zypper is from) won't work on Mint, so that's a problem too. But I do know that...

Would it be legal for me to boot MATE to download one from there to extract the sounds and put them on Cinnamon?
You can't generally mix and match components from different desktops like that, I'd say 'legal' but probably not possible.

Re: Alternative to Blueman?

The problem isn't necessarily blueman, if you have underlying issues with your BT card or device compatibility (which varies), a bluetooth manager will not fix them. Read the how to get help link in that pink bar above, post some system info, and specify the make and model of the device(s) that aren...

Re: Multiple desktops ?

Actually I wouldn't install multiple DEs in Debian or Arch either. Antix comes with 3 or 4 window managers, but those aren't full desktop environments so you don't get all the dependencies that cause problems with multiple DEs. So the Debian installer is by default problematic then. It lets you ins...

Re: Can't adjust brightness

It probably didn't stop working just by itself. Did you do an update or install something? One thing I can say is that a 6.5 series kernel isn't going to help anything with hardware that came out in 2011. New kernels are built for new hardware. You should be using the oldest supported kernel availab...

Re: Where in the file system is the setting to tune the power limit of my old AMD GPU ?

I'd be looking for kernel parameters rather than files to be modified but there's not much here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ATI You definitely are not going to get anything like that screenshot from Windows in Linux. Paste the text output of inxi -G from the terminal to confirm you're really u...

Roughly, just stick to software from the official software sources. Then you should have no need to worry about any of that. Do you mean for every software or only when it's about more advanced things like removing/installing desktop environment/display manager/file manager? There are some s...

Re: Do Cinnamon themes run arbritrary code like KDE themes?

That's a risk with all desktop environments and it's why I haven't installed 3rd party themes for a long time. Even if it isn't a security issue it can still bung up things.

According to your inxi output you are running neither Ubuntu based Mint nor LMDE. You're running Debian 12 Xfce, which is not supported here. This is a Mint forum.
