You need to post more system info to be sure ... copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots plz): inxi -Fxz However, if that card IS that, you aren't going to be able to get any other drivers for it. The open source driver (radeon) is it. Good thing you could...

Re: Linux Mint or LMDE

Yes, LMDE is less friendly to the relatively inexperienced because it's Debian based. Debian is meant for experts, unlike Ubuntu (though many experts use it) and that's reflected in the Debian support docs. The LMDE section here isn't as good as the rest of this forum because there are much fewer us...

I gave the XDM downloader a look, should be fine but is it FREE? There's a button on the page that says "try it for 30 days" and after that what?...
No, it's not free, that's called a trial period. IMHO those things are usually a ripoff.

Re: possibly awkward newbie question about support for Linux

As mentioned find someone local if possible, if there's a college nearby try there, Linux is very widely taught in universities. You wouldn't believe how many people on Linux support forums think they know enough to do real support but know next to nothing.

Too bad, I've been reading the reviews and it looks extremely flaky. Even the old IE version included doesn't work.

Re: How to install graphical drivers?

This might help. https://mintguide.org/system/73-intel-linux-graphics-drivers-installer-for-linux.html I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. They aren't meant for old hardware anyway. As mentioned open Driver Manager and there should be a recommended Nvidia driver on that list, select that. DM...

Re: Problems with installation on multiple distros

.... Someone in this forum said you're good about helping with other distros. ... I think that someone was mistaken. I've never seen any Linux forum that's much good at that really. Distros like Debian and Fedora are NOT intended for newbies, don't bother. If you ask the typical sort of beginner qu...

... I know almost nothing of kernel programming beyond keeping code as barebone as possible)... I hope you're doing this on a spare machine you don't need. The likelihood of you breaking the OS is pretty high. Also, it seems to me this sort of thing was all done years ago with ndiswrapper, and that...

Re: Trouble with FVD browser add on

Personally I'd consider not being able to dl HD video without installing some converter which is probably full of adware (and probably crap anyway) a deal breaker. There are surely better dl extensions.

Why not? I suspect that if your hardware can run this silly program it'll run VB jusst fine.

Yes, I personally believe that I should bother. There is a lot of difference between leaking some data (which probably can't be avoided) and leaking all of the data, all of the time.
+1.

Re: Is it safe to change kernels?

Don't install a newer kernel without knowing how to boot from the previous one, which you can do by rebooting and holding down the left shift key as it's starting. WHen the grub menu appears select the last kernel. Easy, just don't delete the last kernel until you're damn sure the new one works. The...

Re: Video Freezing Every ~1 Second (19 Tara w/ Cinnamon 3.8.9)

I'm reasonable sure that you've messed up your graphics a bit by installing 3rd party drivers via ppa. This is a bad idea in general, this isn't Windows. See this from your inxi report: Graphics: Card: Intel HD Graphics 6000 bus-ID: 00:02.0 Display Server: X.Org 1.19.6 drivers: modesetting (unloaded...

Re: WOW Where do I start?

I haven't done this but on site I trust anbox seems to be the mosst recommended one for UBuntu, and Mint is Ubuntu based unless you run LMDE. For Mint 19.x use Ubuntu 18.04 solutions, for 18.x Ubuntu 16.04. Here's a couple of things to read: https://askubuntu.com/questions/118903/what-android-emulat...
