Re: What's better for Linux

It took me years to learn the main reason WIndows dominates. It's not because it's monolithic. It's because it's not written for end users. It's written for developers. If developers prefer to write their software for WIndows almost everyone will end up using Windows. Linux has a ridiculous set of A...

Re: software rendering

I have four different eeePC computers which give the message.. eeePCs were crap when new and haven't improved over time. I should know, I have a similar netbook. Trying to run Cinnamon on old hardware which was weak when new is frankly ridiculous. It's designed for modern hardware. If you run inxi ...

It may default to auto arrange, try right clicking the desktop to see if there's a way to turn that off.

There's not reallly enough info there. please copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output (no screenshots):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Though I suspect with AMD Vega graphics you should have the amdgpu driver ... don 't just try to install the newest AMD driver, this ain't Windows.

Re: Fresh install vs upgrade which may be faster?

A major point release upgrade done via the web is simply not as reliable as a clean reinstall. There are many threads on this both here and in ubuntuforums ... since non LMDE Mate is Ubuntu based it's no better than Ubuntu in that respect. And if you DO have problems caused by a web upgrade, it's fa...

Yes, if you want to bork your system... See this: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=259109 Ha Ha! Yes, I already borked my laptop trying to sort out fonts with a font manager app ... If you install incompatible 3rd paty fonts ... which is an issue Linux newbies should be aware of ... and...

And what Mint release/version are you using? I suspect you've been reading instructions for other terminals and/or DEs than the one you're using.

Re: Linux Mint 19: General Question

I rarely use ppas either but it's not for security reasons but stability. There's not a kot of backwards compatibility in Linux in general and newer versions may pull in libraries that will break other installed programs. Sometimes they're very important programs. There are some exceptions where the...

Re: Mint does not allow you to change distributions?

You've borked your machine completely somehow, not the fault of Mint or whatever else you tried to install. Best to just back up yopur data and do a clean reinstall.

Re: How to check network usage history

vnstat is the tool I see most often recommended. It's probably installed already ... I'm typing this on 17.3 and it's there. But you have to activate it apparently, the system doesn't seem to preserve network history through rebooots by default. See the 1st and 2nd answers here: https://askubuntu.co...

Re: Color banding problem - Lenovo - Mint 19

According to this ... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1749420 ... there's been a bug re this, and the last post there says it was fixed in kernel v. linux-hwe - 4.15.0-24.26~16.04.1. I'd try installing that. Look up how to revert from CLI in case that breaks something else first...

Re: 360fly Director Software Working - How Too

Searching "linux wine 360fly Director" and "linux 360fly Director" gets me absolutely nothing. It's not in the wine app database. Have you tried the WIne forums? Unfortunately WIne and its derivatives like POL are all crap and you simply can't expect software to work. It's very hti and miss.

Re: Cannot set up ubuntu-system-adjustments

It's telling you that it's missing files, so reinstall that package. Also your mention of dist-upgrade is worrying me, and for all the scenarios I can come up with where you would be using that I would suggest you do to a clean install now because you likely messed up your system. I'm afraid I agre...

Re: LM19 and Wine

WIne is actually rubbish, what you're experiencing isn't as unusual as you may think. Searching "linux wine CQ100" will find the wine app database entry pretty if there's one there, but apparently it isn't. The only relevant entry I could find in a small list of hits is this: https://www.eham.net/eh...

... As all41 has already found out you are no following the intructions carefully. You are trying to in-place upgrade from Mint 17.3 to Mint 19 in one step. ... You really need to follow instructions exactly in Linux (and computers in general), if you don't you're going to get into a lot of grief. ...

Re: WHen there is a new version of Mint does it auto download?

No, it doesn't auto update, and since when updating from 17 to 17.1 broke the Intel video in my laptop I wouldn't want it to.
