Re: A more appropriate Mint screen-shot

... Why can't I modify the MINT-SCREENSHOT that I already have ?? ... There's no reason why you can't. Just download the source code, modify it, and submit your patch. But if, as I suspect, you don't know a thing about programming you may be sorry you asked. And these rants are guaranteed to make d...

Re: Ethernet going strange most every time I update

Hi MDM! I know the Mint doesn't owe me anything. The community 8) But Or, alternatively, because some users insist on running Ethernet devices which do not use the code that's included in the kernels, lol. I don't "instist" to run a special Ethernet device. There is a finite number of PC's and lapt...

Re: what do I really need on start up

I don't know that I need any of the startup programs, Do you mean the Startup Applications? The only one I find unnecessary is the Welcome Screen which is easy to turn off. I suppose you could turn some of the others off but they run in the background. I wouldn't want to mess anything up and I don'...

Re: Coding in Mint?

I wouldn't recommend C or C++ to start ... they are NOT high level programming languages (more like high level assembly language) and not meant for beginners. Try Python instead. It's a good starting language and I read recently (in IEEE Spectrum I think) it's the #1 used language at the moment.

Re: Resolution issues after kernel update

Unfortunately having a new kernel breaking things isn't as unusual in Linux as most beginners think. Which is why it's always recommended that, when cleaning out old kernels, always keep the last one that worked. Assuming you still have the last kernel, I'd suggest booting from that.

Re: cinnamon vs (customized) xfce

I think the differences between Xfce and Cinnamon go far beyond visual effects. I prefer Xfce to Cinnamon but I always turn off the desktop effects in Xfce.

Re: How do I install Intel HD Graphics 530?

You already have the correct driver (modesetting). There's no other one, Intel doesn't really do binary video drivers. Is there a problem with video you're trying to solve?

Re: split audio/video, process audio, recombine audio/video

Avidemux is probably better for this sort of thing because its Copy mode allows exporting to the same video res as the input. Surpisingly (to me anyway) all the others I've tried impose output profiles.

Re: Uneven sound levels on movies - partial fix I found

Idk why it affects it either but you heard it for yourself. Report it, if you wish. The last time I reported an obvious bug with SMPlayer on their forum (a bug with subs and the black horizontal lines you can enable in options - the subs were standing in the middle of the screen, instead of going b...

I agree. SMplayer has been my default video player for years, since before I installed Linux. I'm not installing that any time soon.

Re: How do you fix video tearing

There's no fix that'll work of all chipsets of a particular brand AFAIK, you need to post more system info. Copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output of that here (no screenshots please):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Re: My boot is very slow.

Unless you're booting off a network, which I don't think many Mint users do, you can disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service too. Do this in the terminal You can just copy and paste):

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable NetworkManager-wait-online.service

PLease generate a better system overview, copy/paste this to the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Did you try reverting the kernel as mentioned in that bugzilla? That's a change you can easily revert back.

Re: Can I change Cinnamon for MATE, or another.

@Unclefred If you want a very simple text editor with the toolbar look at 'leafpad' in the repositories. +1 on leafpad, I've been using it as my simple text editor for so long I can't even remember what the default one is with any Mint DE. It doesn't install any dependencies, it's very, very fast, ...

Ok. Now I placed it on my desktop, renamed it to 'Krita' and launch it from there.
But then it's not possible to get it as an icon in the dock?
It may be but I don't use dockers as such and I doubt it. You can't get appimages to integrate with the desktop environment the way normal ones do.

The tutorials you have seen are most probably for older Xmind versions, which have .deb installation file: http://www.xmind.net/download/previous/ In the link just below the Download button for 8 edition is explained that there are some user interface issues with Ubuntu 16.04 (on which Linux Mint 1...

Re: Installing the Krita application

That explains a lot. Thank you. Yes that's the name of the file I downloaded. What does 'integrate Krita to the desktop' mean? Is it the same than in Mac OS dragging a program to the applications folder? And how do I integrate Krita? Well, Linux is like OS X in a lot of ways because they're both Un...

Don't know about the other things but if you plan on running Linux, as it is right now, DO NOT buy an AMD graphics card. Radeon drivers are not supported from 17 onward.

Blame AMD, its up to them.
Rubbish, they may not be the best supported cards in Linux but they ARE supported.
