Re: MS loves Linux? What proof would YOU like to see of that?

Getting tired of ignorant paranoid MS rants, and I haven't had any WIndows installed for years. There are a number of large corporations who work on the Kernel Project, and Microsoft has been one of the top contributors for years. The REAL enemy of Linux is cloud computing but none of these ranters ...

Re: Man pages for idiots (like me)

Good resource. You have to remember that Unix/Linux man pages were never meant for beginners. They're for people who actually understand what the program does but have forgotten a bit of the syntax.

Re: Help requested - remove sound driver

There's not a lot of useful info there, copy/paste this to terminal and copy/paste the text output here: inxi -Fxz This doesn't have much to do with drivers, this isn't Windows. I assume you want to make the Audigy to be the system wide default instead of the internal sound card. There should be a G...

Re: Strategy to Reduce Tray Clutter?

Linux isn't just a free version of WIndows, it works differently, and trying to get it to behave like Windows is really a dead end. A better Linux way is to use multiple desktops/virtual workspaces. For some reason many Linux newbies used to Windows are reluctant to use them or can't see the point. ...

Re: Launching Synaptic Package Manager from CLI produces Gtk-CRITICAL **

I've never run Synapric from a terminal (got burned out enough with CLI decades ago, why use that when the GUI works fine?). But every time I've ever used Synaptic it's asked for a password anyway. So why bother running it with gksudo anyway? And, as you seem to be discovering, in Linux simple error...

Re: AMD Radeon 6770 Fan Control OPEN SOURCE

This bit from the inxi output got my attention: "Kernel: 4.20.0-042000-generic" Don't use 19.1 myself but it comes with a 4.15 series kernel, you may have gone a kernel update or two too far. Is that even a supported kernel in Mint? Try rolling it back to a 4.15 series one and reboot, search "ubuntu...

Hard to say with no system info at all, copy/paste this to the teminal and copy/paste the text output here (no screenshots please): inxi -Fxz And where did you get mesa-va-drivers from? BTW the mpv devs recommend turning off ALL hardware decoding. It hasn't actually been necessaary for playing video...

Really, if you want a kde desktop, it's best to install a kde distro.
He's right, creating a FrankenKDE in Mint is never going to run as well.

The BIOS date of that machine is 2018 but the Intel iris pro 5200 came out 5 years ago, have you updated the BIOS of that machine?

This looks like something incorrectly installed to me, did you get a tarball from here ... https://www.autistici.org/gnome-mastermind/#dload ...?

I'm pretty sure if you just install the repo version of gnome-games you'll get this program, in more useable form.

Re: How can I install Gnome-schedule?

It hasn't been updated since 2016, and, unlike in Windows, there is actually very little backwards compatibility in Linux. It's abandonware. Not good. It also only comes as a tar.gz file. Which usually means you have to compile and build it from source. This method of installation is not recommended...

The *long* term goal is to replace Win10 but I expect it'll take a while before I'm comfortable uninstalling Win10 (actually, I expect to end up needing a minimal Win10 installation left to handle *some* games (e.g.; Mechwarrior 5 coming out in September :) ), but I hope to move 99% of my compu...

Thank-you. So I've just set up Thunderbird with my email account - I don't normally use desktop email clients as I've got no use for them. And what browser? Not everyone likes Chrome for privacy reasons but it has the best format support in Linux so it's worth having just for testing. Get the .deb from the Google site and right click it to install.

Re: Used GPU - checking parameters

It's certainly not as simple as in WIndows and everything I've read about overclocking a gpu in Linux makes me think it's a bucket of worms. I wouldn't bother, this is mostly done for gaming and you'll find enough problems there already.

Re: GPU heating too much with Nvidia's proprietary drivers

That machine has a 2016 BIOS date so you shouldn't have any major support issues with the Nvidia closed driver with a MInt supported kernel So what I'm wondering is, where did you get that driver? The recommended one from the Mint Driver Manager is usually the correct one. However, many Linux newbie...
