Re: Distro-hopping: my results and impressions

... It seems like about half of the distros out there won't even boot, run and install properly, and about 3/4 of those that do have display issues, unmaintained repositories, or other major issues. .... Seems to me that there were issues you couldn't solve, not surprising since most distros have u...

Re: [19beta] pdfchain out?

Mint 19 is BETA and therefore unsupported. Even with a stable new release you'll find that many software packages aren't available for a while. Why should they be in a rush to package their software for an unsupported beta release? So the situation for betas is worse. Newbies installing beta OS rele...

Re: Kaffeine 2.0.12

You have to realize that there's very littly backwards or forwards compatibility in Linux, which is why beginners are advised to install from the tested repos unless necessary. Just wanting the latest version of everything is not considered part of 'necessary'. Kaffeine is a KDE program and as such ...

Re: download videos youtube in firefox

You just aren't going to find a streaming downloader that's always going to work with sites like youtube. They don't like people downloading their streaming content so they're constantly changing the protocols. I don't use browser based streaming downloaders but youtube-dl is good. But I usually use...

Re: Mint 19 Question

I actually liked the old update system as kernel updates could occasionally bork your system and it was set conservatively by default. I am glad to hear it can be re-enabled. I'm Leary of so much weight being put on Timeshift as there are too many instances where it simply will not work, such as du...

Could you be more specific about the error message? Did it mention pulseaudio or are you just assuming it's pulse related? Assuming ~ there has been no error message received If you're going to write something like "I got a pop-up message" etc, of course I assumed you got an error message. Maybe En...

Re: Trouble downloading Audacity

It's recommended generally that beginners stick to the software from the standard, tested repos that you get using software manager or synaptic package manager. Downloading something from the mfr's site seems obvious to a WIndows user but this is Linux, and it's different. The main reason is that Li...

A very strange question from someone who claims to do a lot of programming, but depending on what you want to do, probably not.

Re: I-Red remote control for Cinnamon?

I agree, but I doubt they're going to port that to other DEs. You won't necessarily have to ditch Mint, you'll be able to install Mint (I think Xfce is the recommended version) and then install KDE. This is a verbatim copy of the first couple of sentences of my post. DId you have anything to add bu...

Re: PlayOnLinux apps lost Internet access?

WIne is actually pretty unreliable, and apps that do work have had a bad habit of suddenly not doing so anymore. I'd probably check the Wine forums.

Re: MS looks a bit silly here ...

Actually there are many huge corporations that contribute to the Linux Project and there have been for years. MS is one of the biggest contributors. So it's not like they're that unfamiliar.

And to suggest it was sabotage is just your everyday tinfoil hat ignorance.

Re: Cinnamon/Mate vs KDE - GTK-based desktops vs QT-based desktop

I used to try other file managers than the one that came with the DE but I don't anymore. They never work as well, with the same level of integration, as the native FM. This is particularly true when you install Dolphin in any other Mint DE because they're GTK based desktops. The only possible excep...

Well, that's a clue as to how useful distrowatch is  ... I just use it for the reviews.

Whatever reservations you may have about systemd, it's the only Linux init system that's properly maintained. WHich is why everyone's switching to it.

Try running thunar from the terminal. Post the text of any error messages here.

You should always also provide more system info when asking support questions as well, copy/paste this to the teminal and copy/paste the text output here:

If that machine has the same GPU as the one listed here ... https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-compaq-6910p/specs/ ... then yes, Cinnamon is quite unsuitable. That card is legacy, ie. even if you were running 17.3, where AMD closed drivers are available, it's too old for them. The open source driver (...
