Re: I want to so bad switch to Linux but I feel like I can't right now. I hope I'm wrong.

I used to be a big XP user. When I switched to Mint I first used dual booting to have both. I now use Virtual Box to run XP. Except for a few old games, some fractal programs and some antiquated office programs I rarely even use XP. I only have one program that uses Wine, Mandelbulb 3D (actually th...

OP hasn't been back here in 2 months (since making the topic). Just a heads up. Good point. Maybe someone posted/deleted recently, to bring it up in to the front page? Will notice dates better! LOL. I'm back! I have some important life issues happen recently and a bunch of people at work quit...

I want to so bad switch to Linux but I feel like I can't right now. I hope I'm wrong.

Hello everyone! I'm so tired of Windows 10. I love the compatibility of everything though. I hate the slowdowns, the registry, viruses, spyware and worse ransomware. Also how Microsoft spies on me. I want the best of both worlds one day. The compatibility of Windows with the security and stability o...

Anyone run Windows in a virtual environment?

If you do how is it? I want to run Linux Mint as my main OS. I don't want to have restart my machine every time I want to run M$ Office or some other Windows only program.

Do you like it or don't like it? How's the performance?

Re: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux Mint....

So, why do you want to switch to Mint? It seems you have a long list of reasons NOT to switch! Unless you are willing to spend quite a lot of time trying to make things work, and it will take a lot of time, even if just to track down and install all the new apps you need, and learn how to use them,...

Re: I'm seriously considering switching to Linux Mint....

I love these forums. Thank you all for the replies. Regarding the video card issues. I will be disabling the integrated video card and putting a new video card in from Nvidia. What I'm questioning right now is the performance of Virtualbox running Windows. I know it won't be the same as native hardw...

Re: Thinking of trying different distros out there

If you're asking for out of the box experience, what's wrong with Mint? It has everything you are searching for and more. So basically I am not too sure why you are asking these questions. Did your dad not like Mint or is there some other reason why you are not wanting to use it? As for the other d...

Thinking of trying different distros out there

First off all. I am doing this for my 73-year old Father. That has been brought up only using Windows. There are so many distributions out there that it will take a full day just to look at the popular ones. I have installed the following distributions on my dad's laptop. Here is the link by the way...

No Testimonials forum section?????????

From time to time when I have some time on my hands which I don't have that much anymore with school starting recently. I would head on over to www.ubuntuforums.org. I would read the Testimonials forum section. Of course their was negative comments but most of it was positive experiences. It's alway...

Re: Linux Mint 6 or PCLinux OS 2009 for my 72-year old Father

In regards to the last post the user says he wants to try it out. I spoke with my father on the benefits of using Linux. He ordered a 1 gig dimm from the Internet with my help and should be here tomorrow I hope. After I put the RAM in the machine I will go on my way to install Linux Mint KDE version...

Re: Linux Mint 6 or PCLinux OS 2009 for my 72-year old Father

Wow thanks for the quick feedback. The maximum RAM that this computer supports is 1 GB of RAM. It does have two slots for memory though. Not sure if I just buy 2 sticks of RAM and install it on his computer worth a shot I guess. The RAM is pretty cheap for his computer. $30.00 for 512 MB. I will be ...

Linux Mint 6 or PCLinux OS 2009 for my 72-year old Father

I don't want to start a flame war just looking for an honest opinion. My father has an older Toshiba laptop that he has had for about 7 1/2 years I would say. I want to put Linux Mint 6 the KDE version. Since I heard KDE desktop is less painful for a longtime Windows user. I would like to save him s...

Re: Installation issues. Please help!! Help help help

No I did not do those 2 things you mentioned. I may have to download once again and check the md5 checksum this time and I think I did not change the default burning program in Windows. I checked it and it was at the fastest setting. By the way I used imgburn in Windows XP. I will post a followup. T...

Installation issues. Please help!! Help help help

I just burned the Iso and put in the cd on bootup of my computer. If I am not fast enough I don't see the Linux Mint menu. The first one is Linux Mint and the other one compatibility version. I chose the first one a couple of times. I usually get a login screen. It shows user login in 30 seconds. Bu...
