Re: Mint 19 - HP281MFP - not so solved - more issues.....

many thanks for the advice. It is working again for some reason (I'm not confident it will stay that way...). I'll have a go at your suggestion to connect via USB when the printer next goes AWOL and try a set up from there. I might also to go back to the beginning again and start over the hplip. Is ...

Re: Mint 19 - HP281MFP - not so solved - more issues.....

hp-setup can't find any printers on the network.. But I can still print.. Either hplip or something else is not playing nice.... I have 4 printers listed in Administration > Printers Screenshot at 2018-08-13 18-27-45.png It feels random. Sometimes the programmes (LibreOffice) can find and use the pr...

Re: Mint 19 - HP281MFP - not so solved - more issues.....

frustration continues....... Now xsane scanner no longer works. Some problem with I/O when trying to scan. It feels almost random whether Linux / hplip recognises the printer (wirelessly) then connects to it properly. Is there a way to fix this? In my printers menu - it has now given me 5 printers! ...

Re: Mint 19 - HP281MFP - partially solved

I think there used to be 3. But I deleted one to try to force the system's hand... The extra one had a lot of suffixes after the name and I suspect that was the airprint version. It was also the one which the system wanted to default to using. I've copied the info for the remaining printer below... ...

Turns out I needed to go into hplip itself (via icon on the system tray), select the printer and set as default..... Mint 19 - HP281MFP - not so solved - more issues.....

After hours of searching posts, and reloading hplip (latest) from sourceforge a few times, I have finally got Linux 19 to find my device (and wirelessly too!). I thought my problems were over, but when I go to print, the printer begins to spool up, the dialogue box says the printer has received the ...

help recovering files from linux - lost password

Hi, my mother's Windows computer died (would not boot up) a while back, so I installed a linux partition (Mint 13) to allow her to recover the files she wanted from the windows side of the partition. She resaved them on the linux partion (in her /home/[name]/documents). She's now forgotten her linux...

Will LibreOffice 4 eventually make it onto Software Manger?

I'd like to replace my LO 3 with LO 4; I've read the various posts but since there appears to be so many ways of doing it, and even then some similar methods don't always agree (for example: should I just delete the old LO, or purge, or do I also need to purge additional files (which one post talks ...

LibreOffice 4 - how to update to my Mint 13 distro?

Hi,
I'm running Libreoffice 3 and I've just noticed that Libreoffice 4 is now out, but the software updater doesn't find it (I'm running Mint 13 MATE) and in my Libreoffice 3 there is no "update" path under "Tools-Options-Libreoffice..." Am I missing something really obvious or stupid! Many thanks

mount error on root directory - do I need to do anything?

Hi, going through tutorials I found the mount command - but against my root directory the following came up: /dev/sda5 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) do I need to worry about the (rw,errors=remount-ro)? When I: fdisk -l , it also says my partitions are not in logical order. I partitioned myse...

Re: What is the difference between Debian, Fluxbox, XFCE, ..

what a great post - and such a sad loss. For those trying to chose a distro for an older laptop - I'm running MATE 13 on a 6-year old Lenovo (Intel dual core 1.66 GHz, 2GB RAM) and it works really well. My advice would be don't automatically go for a lighter desktop (unless you like the look/feel) -...

difficulty enabling multiple workspaces in MATE

I've been using Mint 13 MATE and wanted to use the facilty to have more than one workspace on the go. I'd seen a demo where workspaces could be switched quickly. It was simple to work out how to do this in Mint 13 XFCE, but I had to really search around in MATE to find it. The only way I could work ...

Types of acct in Mint - default user vs root

Since installing Mint 13 (MATE) just before Christmas - and being new to Linux - I've been reading up on the tutorials and started playing (carefully) with the command line. Many of the tutorials start off with talk about the root or superuser account, and groups. I'm guessing that in Mint 13, the d...

A thank you to the Mint Team

I had been getting increasingly frustrated with my old OS on my 6-year old laptop. Why can't I press a button and it respond rather than always have to wait? Why is it unhelpful when it goes wrong and patronising when it's working ok? Why does it take an age to boot or shutdown? Why does it bombard ...

That was pure magic! It now sits on the menu in graphics - thank you. One day I hope that I will have learn't enough to understand what I've just typed....! :D
